Ringo Deathstarr Reviews

Shoegaze is a style of music that was created in the 90's and some would even venture to say was perfected shortly after it began by bands such as My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. These bands invented the walls of reverberated guitar distortion, black leather jackets and soft lyrics we associate with the genre. In my opinion, 1991's Loveless by My Bloody Valentine is the best shoegazer album ever written...

Tweet Come for the Band Name, Stay for the Talent With a name like Ringo Deathstarr, one has to assume that this Austin shoegaze-noise-pop trio has a sense of humor. That's important, because otherwise lyrics like "Can't spend time with my friends / 'Cause I no longer have friends" would be met with an eye-roll...

This Austin, TX trio's second album is another first-rate set of shoegazer psych-rock with fuzzy, effects-laden guitars, energetic rhythms, hazy male/female vocals and sugary melodies.

This Austin band's debut full-length is a well-crafted set of shoegazerish psych-rock with strong echoes of classic British shoegaze bands like My Bloody Valentine, Curve and Slowdive, combining distortion-drenched guitar atmospherics with hazy, alternating male/female vocals and some dreamy pop melodies.

On the surface, a band like Ringo Deathstarr almost seems like they're going out of their way to not be taken seriously. For one thing, they named their band "Ringo Deathstarr." For another, the group displays their shoegaze/noise pop influences so blatantly that it's surprising nobody's filed a lawsuit yet...

Mauve, the second full length from Texan rockers Ringo Deathstarr is the sound of yet another guitar band frustratingly intent on emulating the spaced out sound of early 90s shoegaze. While always able to cause a remarkably enjoyable amount of distortion and noise, their early output never really felt like anything other than a derivative attempt at being 'the next My Bloody Valentine'...

Mention the name Ringo Deathstarr and it's fair to say the words 'My', 'Bloody' and 'Valentine' won't be far behind. When early singles compilation Sparkler first appeared three years ago such comparisons were rife, and last year's first full long player, Colour Trip, only served to inflame such accusations that maybe the Austin trio wore their influences a little too closely to their chests. Unfair perhaps, given that in 2012 there's very little which passes for being wholly original...

Austin, TX's Ringo Deathstarr are doing a good job of making themselves inescapable. After dropping their excellent debut, Colour Trip, last March, then bundling together a bunch of EPs and singles as Sparkler in the fall, we get the Shadow EP, four songs showcasing their growing fame and willingness to push beyond the My Bloody Valentine-esque shoegaze forming the basis of their sound. The title track, features .....

If you're going to call your band Ringo Deathstarr it's almost inevitable you'll a) be accused of musical blasphemy by diehard Beatles fans and b) be assumed to be a thrash metal band. Before going any further, we'd like to point out that this Austin-based trio have no allusions of Beatlemania in any shape or form about them or any inclination whatsoever to follow the path of Satan into similar territories as Mortiis et al...
