If you are not a fan of Saxon, chances are, the artists and bands you are a fan of, are fans of Saxon. As one of the pioneering bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWoBHM), Saxon has influenced most of the hard rock and heavy metal acts of the 80's, which then influenced the bands that followed. As such, I have been fascinated by the band since reading interviews with Metallica and Megadeth citing them as influences back in the '80s...

This compilation's title refersto a series of acoustic andorchestratal versions of classicsongs by the NWOBHMlegends included herein, but,in fact, the collection is moreof a mish-mash than sucha description suggests. It'shard to fault a band for givingtheir fans too much material, but a more straightforwardacoustic/orchestral albumwould have had more focusand impact than this 2CDset, which consists of theaforementioned re-versions(five orchestrated, fouracoustic), plus a remix ofStallions Of The...

Few would argue that the mid- 90s was NWOBHM legends Saxon's best period, but Dogs Of War was an important step in the band's return to form after their lacklustre late 80s efforts. 1990's Solid Ball Of Rock had been the hesitant beginning of their renaissance, Forever Free (to some their best 90s album) a consolidation, but Dogs Of War brought together their newly rediscovered hard edge with Biff Byford's melodic sense to make songs both memorable and tough (mostly; Don't Worry has an odd soft...

In this crucial five-year period for NWOBHM stalwarts Saxon, the group signed (perhaps unwisely?) to Carrere, a singles-oriented disco label; yet despite management and distribution issues, the band ultimately carved a niche with a series of classic albums. Capturing the late 70s zeitgeist (melodic and not-quite-metal), their debut album was strong, if not fantastic; Saxon weren't yet firing on all cylinders...

Like Saxon themselves, this fan-funded documentary (boasting a multitude of extras) is a quality but somewhat workmanlike production. For the most part, the story is told exhaustively by the band - most prominently by singer Biff Byford - but members past and present are included, with occasional interjections by peers (Lemmy, Lars Ulrich) and critics (the esteemed Geoff Barton)...

NWOBHM stalwarts Saxon's 20th album has much in common with their classic early 80s output, but it is, for the most part, significantly more metal, building on the tougher sound they introduced on 2004's Lionheart. They've essentially done this by making every subsequent release more "Saxon"-like, ensuring that Sacrifice sounds as the band might have had they come out of the 00s rock/metal scene, rather than the late 70s one...

Saxon, one of a multitude of English heavy metal bands that burst onto the scene in the days of the 1980?s British-metal boom, are one of the genre?s enduring successes. Having sold over 13 million albums worldwide, their influence can be heard to this day, and as a testament to their passion for metal, they still hit the road on lengthy tours, selling out venues across the country and in Europe, and even as far afield as Japan...

After enjoying a limited ?Fan Club Only? UK release, this truly thundering heavy metal DVD is now available nationwide. Just as well, for as far as music docus go, this one has got to be amongst the best. Just like the band itself then! Heavy Metal Thunder ? The Movie, is a no holds barred account of one the world?s most successful and longstanding heavy metal acts ever, Saxon...

Sound: This is Saxon's first studio album, released in 1979. It sounds like Saxon hadn't found their style yet (that is understandable because they had members from ex-prog and ex-blues bands). The music style is NWOBHM but you can hear some prog influences. I don't like the sounds on this album as much as on their next two, it sounds like they were just looking for their own sound. And I think this album was a bit too "trying to be something"...
