Seahaven Reviews

Though Reverie Lagoon: Music for Escapism Only sounds like it should be the soundtrack for a particularly unfortunate show on the CW, Seahaven delivers up something infinitely more interesting. Whereas before its take on pop-punk split the difference between Taking Back Sunday and Title Fight, with throat-shredding vocals and bouncy choruses, the band now embraces cleaner, wider textures. Reverie and its new sound may throw some old fans, but that's a good thing...

"If you don't like what's being said, change the conversation." - Don Draper Stuck in a genre growing staler by the day, Seahaven was on the verge of being lost in the shuffle of lesser (but maybe more marketable) bands peddling the same tired chords. The band didn't want to be remembered as "the guys with some good songs from Winter Forever that kind of sound like Brand New?", so they changed the conversation...

The maturation process of California based group Seahaven is quite astonishing. If one were to compare the bands most recent release to their earliest work it would be difficult to even tell if it was the same band playing. Ranging from angsty post-hardcore to spacey indie rock, Seahaven has been all over the musical spectrum, often with mixed results. Their latest full length release is no different, as their sophomore album struggles to realize its full potential...

Seahaven are charting a pretty cool course this year. Touring with Touché Amoré and mewithoutYou is a good way of promoting Reverie Lagoon: Music For Escapism Only and from the reactions online, it seems that they won over a lot of the crowds. It comes as no surprise given that Kyle Soto's tortured soul and ability to script the most visceral of lines help bring the band's melancholic music to the spotlight with minimal effort...

Seahaven are an enigma when it comes to the current scene of slightly sadder than normal indie-tinged punk ala Tigers Jaw and Pity Sex. From vocalist Kyle Soto's Jesse Lacey-influenced wail on their debut to his Madonna-while-she-was-f ckng Guy Ritchie fake British drawl on Winter Forever, to his now-I-wish-I-was-in-Belle & Sebastian middle ground on their newest EP , the band has followed suit in style in a never ending game of musical Guess Who...

Seahaven's Winter Forever was a record I judged wrong. After a first few listens, it glanced as a 'pretty cool but nothing special' record. Then months after, it grew and grew leaps and bounds on me. Their potent storytelling and an indie-alternative vibe that pushes itself when it touches base on the fundamentals of 90s emo will always have them pegged as a band I dub 'severely underrated'. That's after I realized the error of my ways. Silhouette 7" continues where they last left off...

After the Ghost EP, it was nice to hear Seahaven finally return with a full-length and as I recall the broody, dark tones of vocalist Kyle Soto back then, I wondered how much had this setting changed. Answer: Not much. This isn't a bad thing as fans of the EP should stick nicely to this release. They attenuated little things here and there but what persevered is Soto's unique sound and non-varying tone of disembodiment and dyastopian rule...
