These works are also known as the Two- and Three-part Inventions. BWV 772-801. They were written early in Bach's career, when he was at Cöthen. Along with The Well-Tempered Klavier, they were part of what Bach called the Klavierbüchlein ("the little keyboard book") intended as music for his children to learn to play well on the keyboard. Martin Geck writes about them - though not in detail - in his Johann Sebastian Bach: Life and Works...

If it weren't for pianist Simone Dinnerstein's superb track record with Bach's music, the disappointment of her new release wouldn't be half so keen. In fact, we could probably pass over it in silence. But this disc of the Inventions and Sinfonias comes on the heels of several recorded glimpses of Dinnerstein's revelatory approach to Bach - probing, poetic, sometimes unnervingly direct - and unfortunately, it shares few of those qualities with its predecessors...

But listen to me when I tell you this: Night by Simone Dinnerstein and Tift Merritt is as great an album can get...

Receiving this advance copy of Simone Dinnerstein's new CD was something of a revelation to me. The interpretations of the Bach Partitas show an intricacy of touch and strange beauty which was present in her first CD dedicated entirely to Bach but which goes the extra mile here. The same could be said for Dinnerstein's superb playing of the Schubert Impromptus which are perennially difficult works to pull off...

Classical Pianist Simone Dinnerstein follows up her entrancing Bach CD from last year, "A Strange Beauty," with an effort very much in a similar vein. As before, there is a poetic epigraph - the title "Something Almost Being Said" comes from an aching, mannerly poem by Philip Larkin, "The Trees" - and Dinnerstein comes through with playing of stately beauty. Bach is once again the mainstay, with heartfelt renditions of the First and Second Partitas framing the disc...
