It took the songwriting genius and mirrorball production alchemy of Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards to transform the Sledge siblings from frustrating no-hopers into credible hit-makers. That was in 1979, when the quartet saw the Rodgers/Edwards-helmed singles He's The Greatest Dancer, We Are Family, and Lost In Music catapult them into the higher echelons of pop charts around the world...

Sister Sledge's We Are Family came at the summit of an amazing non-stop burst of creativity from Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, aka The Chic Organization Ltd, in 1978. Recorded simultaneously with Chic's own C'est Chic album, We Are Family was written and produced by Rodgers and Edwards, who had recently scored big with Everybody Dance and Dance, Dance, Dance. They were offered the cream of Atlantic's roster to work with...

Both here and with Chic, Edwards & Rodgers are progressing toward fillerless albums, and though I could do without the tautological directions to "Easy Street" (you simply catch "the bus of opportunity") I'm delighted that only one of these eight songs is a throwaway. But none of them is as meaty as any of the three good cuts on We Are Family, which isn't how they did it with Chic.

The disco disc features identical versions (at 8:06 and 6:04) of the two side-openers--the title track, a magnificent, soul-shouting sisterhood anthem that could set straight cheerleaders and militant lesbians dancing side by side, and "He's the Greatest Dancer," a seductive tribute to a fellow who gets to doff his designer clothes in the presence of countless panting women...

WhileThe Best of Sister Sledge (1973-1985) does contain the best of Sister Sledge (eight bouncy minutes of"We Are Family"), it's stuck with the rest of Sister Sledge: slick,soul-free disco remainders. C

Producer-composer Narada Michael Walden has pulled off a major coup in creating for Sister Sledge an album equal in strength to We Are Family, the landmark 1979 LP produced by Chic's Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers that put the foursome on the map...

Although Sister Sledge had already peaked with their 1979 powerhouse We Are Family LP, they returned in the first half of 1980 with Love Somebody Today. Not quite as successful as its predecessor, but still showcasing the group's remarkable vocal strength, the album foundered primarily because it hit the brick wall laid down by the burgeoning disco backlash, but still managed to peak at number seven on the R&B; charts in March...
