Smash Mouth Reviews

Sound: There's a good balance of ska upstroke beats and hard rock, and they seem to find a good balance between humor and anger- and both, in some tracks. The bassist is incredibly fast, and so is the guitarist - almost punk-y. // 8 Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics are pretty immature, but sometimes just hilarious - ("You used to call me shnookums and sh** like that, now you're after me with a baseball bat")...

Sound: It has stheir original ska-punk sound and also has a lot of their natural rock sound on. It is basically a greatest hits showcasing all of their best songs. Good yet simple guitar work and their ska based songs sound excellent. There are quite a few of covers on this record but I think thats just something they wanted to do...

Surveying the world from a temporary star ("Then the Morning Comes," "I Just Wanna See").

These sunbaked Cali clowns are the epitome of mindless, good-timey frat-boy groups ? and more power to them. While their first album basically boiled down to one terrific single (the retro-trippy "Walking on the Sun"), this time on Astro Lounge Smash Mouth's newfound attention to songcraft yields 15 swell slices of goofy, post-psychedelic pop-rock. Hey, any late-'90s band canny (or shameless) enough to cop ? & the Mysterians' organ sound ("Can't Get Enough of You Baby") is welcome on my stereo.

From the bedazzling harmonies of the Beach Boys to the ska-tingedfroth of No Doubt, California pop has always been a balm forhammock swingers everywhere, the EZ-does-it antidote to rock'sblack-and-blue world...

Memo to the cartoon network: Smash Mouth need their own show. They already seem to exist in their own New Wave-damaged, Farfisa-driven world - they share Sugar Ray's humorous outlook and dress sense but little else...
