Status Quo Reviews

Two thoughts popped into my head when I started listening to this record and at the same time closely examining cover/bio and filling in the file for RR (writing down times, songs, genre, players, ...).The first one was that I don't, and I emphasise DO NOT, want to see old blokes naked. Even if they are the famous members (get it?) of the British institution that is called Status Quo and the pictures are taken by rock star/photographer Bryan Adams...

It's not fair to the objective record buying public to let me review something The Frantic Four - nickname of the original members of British 3-chord institution Status Quo - did. I absolutely love almost every song on the band's 70's output. A little before my time you say? True but I loved discovering them later on. 'BackWater', 'Rain', 'Railroad', 'Forty-Five Hundred Times', name it, all absolutely brilliant (a little more than) 3-chords boogie rock...

With the original Frantic Four shortly to be on the live trail again, this is a timely deluxe reissue of the album - their first for Vertigo, after a frustrating time on Pye - that elevated them from journeymen rockers to theatreand then stadium-fillers.

Those that missed out on the much talked about reunion of the original 'frantic' four members of Status Quo must have been on holiday somewhere without access to any form of news of what's going on in the world. Now that I come to think about it, wouldn't that be a wonderful place to live? Anyway, the jolly old boys of Status Quo didn't cease to exist as we came to know and love them, they're just operating in two different versions these days. The SFW version and the NSFW version...

The Quo reunion experience lived up to expectation, and this DVD of the Frantic Four's Wembley Arena show is one of several ways to relive it. For some fans, the sight of bassist Alan Lancaster hitting the mic for Junior's Wailing will simply melt away the years, while others were too young to see this line-up, which split in 1981 when drummer John Coghlan departed...

Following 2011's latest studio album "Quid Quo Pro" and another three live albums (sigh) comes this brand-new "Bula Quo!", which - according to the subtitle - started with guitars and ended with guns! Indeed, the album has been inspired by the band's incredible adventures filming their first ever feature-film of the same title. "Bula Quo!" comes as a 2CD digipak, with the first disc featuring 9 tracks, written as the soundtrack for the film...

Taking "If you only had five Quo albums..." as its premise, should you know Quo for their heads-down, hard-boogieing rock singles (rather than their psych/pop era), then this does the job, albeit with some repetition. Diehards recently celebrated the return of the classic "Frantic Four" line-up of Rossi, Lancaster, Coghlan, Parfitt, and their setlist largely comprises tracks from this collection - though not 1980's No 3 12 Gold Bars singles set...

Sound: Great. As per usual. Frame's and Rick's teles create the perfect sound here. And of course it's where "What You're Proposin" came from. All appear on the album as well as (if you have the remastered CD) the instrumental AB Blues. An utterly unique track with a very raw sound. Quo are in their prime here pushing the shuffle technique as far as it'll go. Great...

Sound: Well I must say that the entire album is beautiful. A real kick ass album. You can definitely hear all kinds of styles including country, blues and rock. Rhino's Status Bass really keeps the band tight and 'crisp'. I was surprised to find that Quo have changed their sound. A great drum sound keeps the band moving and really make you know that the song has a sense of direction. A great mixture of slow and quick stuff too. Also some nice harmonies on the voices. A great one to buy...
