Steep Canyon Rangers Reviews

There's an overriding sense of familiarity on the latest album from the Steep Canyon Rangers. For me, it's a personal one: the "Ottawa River" is mentioned on the song "Camellia", and I practically live on that river (and I'm pretty sure that the band is referencing my neck of the woods, since it also comes after a reference to the "Pontiac", which would seemingly namecheck the Quebec side of the waterway). Maybe the reference to my burg (thanks, guys...

Rounder At this point in their ever-rising career, the Steep Canyon Rangers are inextricably linked in the minds of the music-loving public with their high-profile boss and collaborator Steve Martin. He's officially nowhere to be found on Tell the Ones I Love, but in his absence, you can't help but notice that the Rangers have cultivated their own wry musical wit...

While only in their 20s, the bluegrass music of The Steep Canyon Rangers is that more commonly found being played by much more experienced and well-seasoned veterans. With the production assistance of Mike Bub and label support of Rebel Records, these guys have climbed the ladder to stardom quickly. There's always room for solid, young bands with traditional chops and original material...

All in their 20s, The Steep Canyon Rangers are one of a new generation of young bands with solid traditional chops who will, with the support of a major record label like Rebel, carry the bluegrass torch. The fact that their name was inspired from Deep Canyon Stout doesn't mean that they don't have respect for the music and its tradition. The band members (Woody Platt, Mike Guggino, Graham Sharp, Charles R...

For anyone who thinks bluegrass is nothing more than a bunch of hillbillies making a terrible racket on washtubs and whiskey jugs, Steep Canyon Rangers are here to knock some cotton-pickin' sense into ya. The five-man band--six, when actor Steve Martin sits in on banjo--has been reinventing bluegrass for the last decade...

It's rare that a band can take a three-year break from playing their own music, but, in the meantime, gain popularity and earn awards and acclaim from their peers, critics, and fans. But anything is possible when you add Steve Martin to the equation (for you math majors, Steve Martin + X = Better). Since their last solo release, 2009's Deep in the Shade, the Steep Canyon Rangers have been busy touring and recording with the comedy legend turned banjo superstar...

Years ago, I wrote a feature story about The Steep Canyon Rangers for Bluegrass Unlimited magazine. I predicted that the band, by the time its members were thirty, would be well-known far and wide for their brilliant performances and excellent recordings. Now, this tight unit from western North Carolina could be one of the most recognizable bands in bluegrass today...

Immensely gifted, the Steep Canyon Rangers have won over many a skeptic crowd during their tour as the supporting and backing band for Steve Martin as he tours the country with his Banjo album. The Rangers consist of five talented musicians in banjoist/ chief songwriter Graham Sharp, fiddler Nicky Sanders, bassist Charles Humphrey III, mandolin player Mike Guggino and lead vocalist and guitarist Woody Platt...
