The Ataris Reviews

Sound: Wow this album really roked my socks. Kris Roe's vocals sound the best of all. He nows how to fit the mood. I especially like the bass parts on Teenage Riot. What also really stood out was the piano backround right after the movie clip thingy in Fast Times At Drop-Out High. Yes everyone should buy this cause it fits for everymood. // 10 Lyrics and Singing: Mostly all the lyrics are spectactular on this album. Some of the lyrics are even kind of funny...

Sound: This album has a sound that never gets boring, or forces you to change cds after a while. The vocals, guitars and drums all work perfectly, creating songs that I just wouldnt change. // 10 Lyrics and Singing: Perfect in a word. I've enjoyed many of the finest moments of my life listening to this album, and also some bad ones. I can absolutely relate to the lyrics. Driving home, window down thinking about a girl you may never see again; nothing comes close...

Sound: Anyone who can pull off a cover song of one the greatest anthems ever aka Boys Of Summer is good in my book. The Ataris are a hard hitting band out of Cali and you can tell in their music. That's ok though, I love the sound of all the Cali bands and these guys are no exceptions. While not overally original they rock hard and have some great songs. // 8 Lyrics and Singing: Ah, the lyrics. Well, to be frank you can only write so many songs about summer before it gets old...

Clocking in at 52:40, 'So Long Astoria' is a CD of one act. Pop punk with twinges of emo thrown into the mix drag for the length of the record until an unplugged "Saddest Song" bonus track at the end. The album is like a late-afternoon episode of 24. At times the album is excellent, Jack shooting some dodgy Serbs, whilst at others it feels like a musical version of Teri's amnesia or watching Kim's boobs run around LA to fill time...

A few years ago, The Ataris reloaded with three new members and I paid it no mind, figuring it wasn't going to elevate them from their just-another-middling-American-band status. Boy was I wrong. Welcome the Night is a surprisingly charged, enjoyable, passionate piece of rock whose best tracks, like Not Capable of Love, Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Connections Are More Dangerous Than Lies, have a dirty, dangerous, brooding thing (sexuality?) about them...

Sound: The guitar parts, bass parts and drum parts on this album are quite fast, compared to most other ataris albums. So fast, that most of the 21 songs only last about 1 and a half minutes each. 'Four chord wonder' is probably the best song as it has a nice bass riff at the beginning, a catchy solo near the end and a dig at punk bands who use four chord progressions. // 8 Lyrics and Singing: Kris Roe really is a great song writer, and people like his stuff...

Bands are often like boxers. Any pugilist worth his salt talks up his skills and predicts how the fight will end before getting tangled up in a tedious slugfest. The release of a new album can breed something similar in bands, each promising an exquisite array of sonic delights – then rarely delivering on their lavish promises. And... bam! Here are The Ataris, a US seven-piece with their first album in four years. Thwack...

The label stuck to the front of the case reads: "One of the fastest growing punk bands in recent memory. This album is a true delight filled with heartfelt hyper-melodic punktales of teenage dreams and broken hearts." And that pretty much sums it up. These are the kinds of songs that, if you listen to as your driving around in the summer, or pretty much anytime, you can't help but reminisce about an old girlfriend, boyfriend, or growing up in general...

For all the kids out there who have ever made a demo tape and given it to your favorite band, hoping and praying that somehow, some way they'll call you up and tell you how great you are and want to make a record right away, just a fantasy, right? It sounds too good to be true, but it happened to Kris Roe. Kris went to a Vandals show and gave the band a tape; weeks later he got a call from Vandals founder/owner of Kung-Fu Records, Joe Escalante, asking him to do a record for his label...
