Autotheism is a highfaluting term pertaining to the deification of one-self, and it's also the name bestowed upon the long-awaited follow-up to the lauded, Planetary Duality. It is a fitting title in view of the fact that vocalist Derek Rydquist, bassist Brandon Griffin, and guitarist Steve Jones have all departed in the four years between albums, leaving Keene standing alone as the chief orchestrator and founding member of the Faceless...

The Faceless were far superior to the majority of their tech-death peers even on their debut, 2006's Akeldama; they blasted and broke down like everyone else, but genuinely necessary keyboards and other original touches vaulted them out of the pack. Two years later, Planetary Duality cemented their awesomeness, and now, on their third album, they've gone completely insane...

Sound: The Faceless are one of those bands where the first impression is largely decided on who the fans are. Being signed to Sumerian, you'd expect a band full of tosh about how "important" their new and improved breakdown formula is (when it's just the same chord moved from a 6 string to an 8 string) and how "the punk scene is different from the metal scene" and all that media spin. The Faceless seem to be the most out of place band on their roster...

Zigzagging through genres and possessing more mood swings than a pregnant lady, The Faceless' third album, Autotheism, is a sure bet to crush skulls and shut up the Blabbermouth trolls for a few weeks. Described as a semi-conceptual album, Autotheism is a man's journey of self-discovery and transformation to a god of his own reality. It begins with the "realisation of the power he possesses and moves through every step of an ever-evolving reality that the future may have in store...

4/5 Ya gotta admire a band that believes in itself. With its third album, the Faceless unveil a new lineup and a bigger, more ambitious sound, one that pushes their technical approach into the realm of full-blown prog. Given the album's overall concept--"autotheism" means self-deification, and the album opens with the appropriately-titled "Creation"--the occasional dips into semi-symphonic grandeur definitely fit the mood, as do the Greg Lake-ish vocals on "Solitude...

Sound: Planetary Duality. The title implies science fiction, which is relatively prevalent throughout the album, with song titles such as 'XenoChrist' and 'Shape Shifters.' The album opens with the short, hard hitting Prison Born, with its blisteringly fast fills and stop-rhythm chorus...
