The Kooks Reviews

The Kooks have announced their new album Listen will be released in September, the follow up to 2011's Junk of the Heart. The lead single Down was released last month, and they've released a four track EP under the same name with three B-sides that aren't on the forthcoming album's tracklisting. The unfortunate side of this is that the other three tracks are far better than Down. Yet this extended play is still average at best...

After three years, The Kooks have reappeared with a teaser EP, Down, before dropping their new album later this year. The four tracks, three of which can be streamed on soundcloud, all have flecks of 'typical' Kooks, but each time it's something a little different paired with a new sound for the Englishmen, creating a weird, familiar-but-not feeling...

You might expect the Kooks to know what they're doing. Formed in 2004, the south London four piece are unashamed survivors of the wave of 00s UK guitar bands that included The Libertines, Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand, and a decade of experience needn't make any guitar band a dull bunch, as the Kooks can show us today. Lead track "Down" is an edgy artfunk riff given a swamp blues rhythm that breaks into a classic retro indie chorus. Quite a lot going on in 2...

Sound: The Kooks have been taking a lot of flack for a number of reasons in the past year. On one hand there's the crowd that is simply annoyed by frontman Luke Pritchard's allegedly growing ego, while there's a larger group that's more bothered by the fact that the band's new record isn't quite as memorable as the debut Inside In/Inside Out...

Sound: The Kooks are the best new British band for, well, a very long time. All the hype at the moment is for the Arctic Monkeys, but there are in my opinion only one/two songs worth mentioning on Whatever People Say, while Inside In Inside Out is a rock album with true pedigree. From the beginning it plays like a greatest hits, and this clever young band from Brighton have finally started out-selling the Flunkeys...

Hailing from Brighton, England, The Kooks indulge in post-Coldplay Britpop/soft-rock, with upbeat ditties here, mopey ballads there. It's all perfectly polished, each band member dutifully doing his thing, from singer Luke Pritchard to guitarist Hugh Harris, bassist Peter Denton and drummer Paul Garred. But save for occasional bursts of fuzzy synths and nervy guitars, notably on closer Mr. Nice Guy, this third album proves to be rather dull and forgettable.

The Kooks have arrived at album number three, one of an erratic disposition. The band's endeavours here frequently fluctuate in quality, ensuring a frustrating experience. The title-track strikes gold early, its frosty ambiance ushering in an impassioned crescendo. "I want to make you happy," declares front man Luke Pritchard, a striking simplicity defining his sentiments. The song is an example of super-sweet, indie-rock romanticism executed to a tee...

Brighton-based pop chameleons The Kooks aren't exactly out to change the music forever with their hooky nostalgia. Their goals are simpler, if no less important--for proof, check the chorus of "Junk of the Heart," the title track from their third full-length. "I wanna make ya feel happy / I wanna make ya feel alive," sings frontman Luke Pritchard, bouncing on a feather bed of strummy, winsome, Kinks-ish quirk...

The Kooks have always had more charm than talent. The U.K. fourpiece's 2006 eponymous debut was as winning as they come during the first few listens, but its simple pop tunes lost their luster over time. After a largely ignored sophomore set, the quartet is back with a third album burdened with the get-your-jokes-ready title Junk of the Heart. Caveat emptor: It turns out that these dozen songs aren't so much trash as they are trinkets...
