An early curfew for a club night meant an early start, so it was gratifying to see a good number of people already in place to see Cornish punk trio Bangers bash out a solid half hour of gruff melodic punk on October 9 in Glasgow. Sam Russo was up next â?? having jumped straight from the Masked Intruder tour to this one, this was my second time seeing him in Glasgow in as many weeks...

The Lawrence Arms - Metropole Record Label: Epitaph Release Date: January 28, 2014 It's been eight years since the world was properly acquainted with The Lawrence Arms. Though the band teased with the rowdy 2009 EP Buttsweat and Tears , vocalists Brendan Kelly and Chris McCaughan haven't been this sincerely self-reflective since 2003's The Greatest Story Ever Told , lauded by many as one of the greatest albums to be released in the genre. Oh Calcutta...

It's been just about eight years since we last hear a full-length record from the Lawrence Arms. They did put out the Buttsweat and Tears EP to mark their 10th anniversary in 2009, but other than that the band has been branching out. Chris McCaughan recorded solo material under the Sundowner moniker, while Brendan Kelly made a record with his other band the Wandering Birds...

The 19th century Muscovite, Fyodor Dostoyevsky had a narrow miss with a firing squad. And consequently, we received Crime and Punishment from the later stage of his authorship, post a four-year Siberian exile. Whilst The Lawrence Arms' absence was double that deficiency since Oh! Calcutta!, they have delivered their sixth studio album, Metropole on Epitaph Records...

I like sincerity in music. There's a lot of other stuff that I like as well - acoustic guitars, lyrics with allusions to classic novels, singers with vaguely Southern accents - but sometimes I just really want something sincere and straight up, free from gimmicks or lofty ambitions. That's what you get with The Lawrence Arms...

If you already can't get enough of Metropole and you are foaming at the mouth for more, it may seem obvious, but look no further than News From Yalta. This E.P. has three songs that can easily fit on The Lawrence Arms' new full length. One may pose the question, "Well why didn't they just put these songs on Metropole?" One answer would be, "Well they come on the deluxe version of the album on iTunes," but the better answer is "Don't question it and just listen because this E.P. is fantastic...

For the first half of The Lawrence Arms' career, the band proved itself to be a punk-rock workhorse. After releasing five full-lengths and a compilation, as well as touring relentlessly over the course of seven years, the fact that its members would occasionally turn up in other projects was a testament to their drive. This type of energy can only be sustained for so long, though, and following 2006's Oh! Calcutta!, the trio pumped the brakes...
