The Manhattan Transfer Reviews

Named after John Dos Passos's 1925 novel and formed in 1969, Manhattan Transfer are best remembered in the UK for their 1977 chart-topper, Chanson D'Amour, recorded for Atlantic. Though their pop chart heyday may seem a distant memory, the Grammy-winning group (which currently comprises charter member Tim Hauser, along with 70s recruits Alan Paul, Janis Siegel and Cheryl Bentyne) continue to ply their slick, jazz-inflected harmonies with tasteful aplomb...

As a vocal group, they offer a lighthearted foil to Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross. The Transfer has always been more pop-oriented than smiled upon by the jazz community...

A few months ago my wife and I saw The Manhattan Transfer in concert and though they sounded great, the performance had a "by-the-numbers" feel of dispassionate professionalism. The group seemed to be saying to the audience, "We'll do the songs you want to hear if you'll listen to the new material we want to sing." One of those new tunes was "Vibrate" which is also the title of the Manhattan Transfer's first studio album in four years...

The Manhattan Transfer The Egg Albany, N.Y. Sept. 25, 2009 The Manhattan Transfer vocal group?they of the multiple Grammy awards (10) and strong allegiance to jazz?shows no signs of wear and tear after some 35 years performing and recording. The group has just released The Chick Corea Songbook on Four Quarters Entertainment, and is on tour doing some of that music as well as an assortment of pieces from their prestigious history...

Significant as it is that the Manhattan Transfer has been around for 40 years, it is far more remarkable that those four decades have been marked by near-continuous artistic expansion and advancement. The Four Freshmen and the Hi-Los can statistically claim greater longevity, but the Manhattan Transfer must rightfully be credited as the most enduringly creative vocal group in jazz history...

As the memory of the way they demean their material onstage fades, I find I can admire and even enjoy their second album. The scatter-shot eclecticism of the first LP has been aimed--especially on side one, which I much prefer--at the kind of novelty tunes, rock and non-rock, that everyone who listened to pre-Beatles radio loved...
