The Pack A.D. -- Do Not Engage (Nettwerk)
Few garage rock duos succeed in saying something singular, but with Do Not Engage, The Pack A.D. makes a persuasive case for inclusion in that select group. Based out of Vancouver, BC and consisting of guitarist/vocalist Becky Black and drummer Maya Miller, the band has been gigging relentlessly since its genesis in 2006...

The Pack AD are a Vancouver two-piece garage rock outfit (think White Stripes, Black Keys, etc) comprised of singer-guitarist Becky Black and drummer Maya Miller. Since 2008's debut Tintype, the pair have been unleashing no-holds-barred albums featuring plenty of riffage and pounding rhythms, coupled with Black's strong-yet-vulnerable vocals. 2011's Unpersons was regarded by many fans as a career highlight...

Tweet Actually, DO Engage This One The Pack A.D., a Vancouver-based garage rock duo made up of singer/guitarist Becky Black and drummer Maya Miller, have had custody over their genre following the dissolution of the White Stripes and the changing palette of the Black Keys. Or, at least, they play like they do...

The Pack A.D. Do Not EngageBy Alan RantaVancouver duo Maya Miller and Becky Black are seemingly poised for global domination after taking their Pack a.d. project from indie darling Mint Records to international conglomerate Nettwerk. Continuing their move away from the raw sound of their first couple of albums, their fifth studio effort contains less blatant garage fuzz and blues worship, usurped by a keener ear for melody and chorus...

It's not surprising that the Pack A.D. are trying to distance themselves from their lo-fi blues-punk roots. Being a guitar/drums duo left them too open to the inevitable White Stripes/Black Keys comparisons, even if they never really sounded much like either. However, moving toward a sound closer to 90s alt rock isn't really the best fit for their talents and makes for an album that's as frustrating as it is good...

Drenched in fuzzed-out guitar riffs and a '70s-inspired rock aesthetic, the most recent offering from Vancouver, BC duo the Pack A.D. blends their bluesy approach with elements of British punk and experimental electronica. Their fourth full-length album, Unpersons, finds singer/guitarist Becky Black and drummer Maya Miller focusing their musical vision into a tightly packed, snarky exploration of failed relationships, proving once again that these musicians are not to be messed with...

Singer/guitarist Becky Black and drummer Maya Miller of Canadian duo the Pack A.D. manage to, uh, pack a lot of meaning into the title of their fourth full-length, Unpersons. In the broadest sense, they subsume their identities for the great glory of being in a kickass band, and in the process place themselves in the pantheon of messy garage punk 'n' blues 'n' roll: White Stripes, Black Keys, Kills, Black Diamond Heavies, Dead Weather, Cheater Slicks, to say nothing of ten thousand other bands...

If you don't want your guitar-and-drums garage-blues-punk duo to be constantly compared to the White Stripes, maybe don't say that in your press release. Or at the very least, don't hire the Stripes' former producer, Jim Diamond. Luckily, Vancouver rockers the Pack A.D. are good enough to transcend that hard-to-avoid reference point. If you've ever caught them on tour, you'll be pleased to find out that the new album finally captures their live show's brute volume and power...
