The Prodigy Reviews

Never leave Prodigy for dead. People tried that in the mid 2000s, and Return of the Mac came out to blindside them: Alchemist shined behind the boards, providing a timelessly grimy soul-break soundtrack, while the Mobb Deep vet refocused and returned to his malevolent street-noir wheelhouse after years of questionable crossover bids. What was originally intended as a promo vehicle for Prodigy's 2008 LP H.N.I.C...

Looking back, it's not surprising that electronic dance music made such a splash in the U.S. during the mid-1990s. The alternative rock revolution launched by Nirvana's Nevermind had curdled into mediocrity, with bland and soulless copycat bands polluting both the charts and airwaves. Music fans were restless; they wanted something new. Some latched on to the burgeoning alt-country movement, while others turned to the more ironic brand of indie rock offered by groups like Pavement...

Braintree ravers were already a big deal before the release of this third album, 1994's LP having hit No.1. But if the band's ballistic beats could (just about) be ignored in 1995, their releases of 1996 changed everything. Breathe, issued in November, charted at No.1, laying a perfect foundation for The Fat of the Land's summer-of-97 launch. But it was this set's lead single which elevated The Prodigy from crossover attractions to mainstream-slaying megastars...

The original "H.N.I.C." was the product of a nurturing environment. Released at the height of New York's rap dominance, a time when Gotham rappers dominated airwaves well beyond Hot 97's range and album sales enjoyed a pre-iTunes crest, it was quite indicative of the scene's marketability that a solo album from Mobb Deep, by no means a household name, could reach gold sales in a month...

Sound: It is a shame that bands like The Prodigy have very limited freedom in music industry. I mean, when you are trying to be innovative, most of the times your creation will not be appreciated by the crowd, who's closed-minded and mainstream-oriented vision feels unsafe every time something original comes up. After all, electronic music nowadays can only be heard in nightclubs and on satellite radios (with few exceptions, of course)...

In the past five years, Mobb Deep's Prodigy has gone from legend to prisoner to meme to author. Now, after being released from jail just over a year ago, he's taking on a predictable, and yet maybe impossible, task: regaining relevance in a kid's game. H.N.I.C...

At the close of Worlds on Fire, the new live album from techno veterans the Prodigy, front man Maxim tells a screaming crowd that "This is the f***ing best night of our f***ing lives tonight!" Now, you would think that the Prodigy have had their fair share of great nights. Ever since 1992's Experience, the group's been making serious waves in the techno world, and 1997's The Fat of the Land made them into worldwide stars...

With a name like Bumpy, you have to be bad - and he was. In fact Ellsworth Raymond Johnson may be one of the top criminal minds in Harlem history, let alone in the annals of organized crime in the United States. In an era where Italian mobs held power and control over every racket in New York City, Bumpy stood toe to toe with them and gave no quarter, and in due time Bumpy not only earned their respect but that of Harlem's criminals as well...

It must be galling for rising dance stars to see 40-somethings bounce around a stage like men half their age, owning festival-sized audiences in a way they, in all likelihood, never will. But then again, The Prodigy outgrew genre niches long ago, imprinting themselves on the national consciousness in the mid-90s with a run of unforgettable singles. Hearing the biggest of them, Firestarter, on the group's first official live album takes one right back to the summer of Shearer and Sheringham...
