Tiger Army Reviews

"TIGER ARMY NEVER DIE!" - every Tiger Army intro ever. Sometimes I think I love Tiger Army too much. The retro horror imagery is cool. The psychobilly rocking is neat. The songs about doom, death and/or Tiger Army's immortality rule. "Tiger Army" is just a great band name. Which is funny, seeing as Tiger Army was barely a band when frontman Nick 13 signed with Hellcat Records on the strength of an EP...

Tiger Army's latest album Music from Regions Beyond is rhythmically and lyrically powerful. Tiger Army is self proclaimed to "always have been and always will be a Psychobilly band" consisting of Nick 13 on guitar and vocals, Jeff Roffredo on vocals and stand up bass, and James Meza on drums. I purchased the album a couple of days after seeing Tiger Army perform at Warped Tour in Ventura. The intensity of their live performance is matched by the strength of their album...

Nick 13, lead singer and guitarist of Tiger Army is rightly very proud of their new album Music from regions beyond. He toldGigwise recently: "Sonically, we wanted to make the best-sounding record of our career so far -- we succeeded, with the help of producer Jerry Finn. Creatively, I wanted to make a musically diverse record that stayed true to the music we've made in the past while pushing forward into new territory at the same time...

It's weird that Tiger Army's Nick 13 is from Ukiah, California, because he sounds like AFI's Davey Havok, who was also raised in Ukiah, California. Now that I introduced AFI, I'll use 'em. Regions sounds like a psychobilly version of the last AFI record - it wants to please everyone, and consequently can't please anyone. It's not punky enough for the punks, not 'billy enough for the weirdoes (like me) and not accessible enough for the uninitiated...

Sound: Never a band to sit back and rest on their laurels, Tiger Army's latest offering again branches out from their psychobilly roots and embraces a much heavier and darker punk sound more reminiscent of mid-'90s AFI. This may not be too surprising what with front man Nick 13's previous ties with the band, but it is certainly pushed forward even further with the inclusion of AFI's Davey Havok on lead vocals for four of the albums songs...

Sound: Tiger Army, probibly the greatest American Psychobilly band ever. Where should I even begin with describing their sound. Like most other American Psychobilly bands they mix the agression of Punk Rock/Hardcore, the rhythm of Rockabilly, and lyrics that remind you of something The Misfits would sing. Guitarist, Nick 13, uses a delay pedal with some distortion to produce that "old skool" Psychobilly sound, also Nick's "galloping" strumming gives them a unique sound...

At what magical crossroads do Morrissey and suburban skate rats meet?Improbably, both the poet laureate of English mope and countlessacolytes of the Vans Warped Tour (Tiger Army plays its main stage thissummer) are fans of the L.A. trio, and we can see why. Frontman Nick 13,an unabashed rockabilly romantic, emotes in his best Smiths-ian warble, while his bandmates ? drums and stand-up bass only ? bash away atpompadour-punk grooves with melodic abandon. Tiger Army practically invented modern American psychobilly -- that rousing, darkly romantic amalgam of punk and rockabilly -- but their fourth album is a schizophrenic inversion of everything that made the genre fun. Instead of breakneck strumming, the Los Angeles trio two-steps into pinched new wave ("As the Cold Rain Falls"). Instead of acrobatic howling, singer Nick 13 adopts suave bilingual crooning ("Hechizo De Amor")...

Tiger Army are currently enjoying their biggest success in their nearly 10 years as a band. But the success has come at an extremely steep price. Last year drummer Fred Hell was the victim of a botched robbery and was shot four times, including once in the head. While he recovered from the shootingand with a bullet still in his brainthe drummer was unable to work in the studio for this new studio album and a replacement was found. But Hell's name is still in the credits. The band also appe...
