Tom Cochrane's hit, "Life Isa Highway," doesn't let you in on his dirty little secret: It's ahighway measured in kilometers. A lifelong Canadian who sells likegangbusters in the tundra, Cochrane has spent most of his careerbeing described in the U.S. as "the Canadian X" ? where X equals BobSeger, Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, or any other heartlandyapper whose name you'd recognize. Taking the best from Bob Seger and John Mellencamp and melding it into something all his own, Tom Cochrane comes up shining as he takes you for a trip down Ragged Ass Road. Short, concise stories about life, love, loss, and the hope of renewal and redemption fill up this set. Some of the best include "I Wish You Well," and the Dylanesque "Crawl," and the title track. All in all, a solid set.

Cochrane has always celebrated those moments without tagging anything else onto them...

The three-CD box set Ashes To Diamonds at least closes the chapter neatly on the heartland rocker's Red Rider period. The set includes one track from Cochrane's obscure 1974 solo release, then chronicles the various Red Rider albums, from 1980's Don't Fight It to 1988's Victory Day. Only one track (the hit "Life Is A Highway") appears from his current Mad Mad World solo phase...
