Tommy Emmanuel Reviews

My household has a policy about Xmas records: Nothing to be played until the week before Xmas day and nothing cheesy even then, Tommy Emmanuel almost made me break that policy. Not only is his genial face looking out over a steaming cup of something but I jnew that the contents would be equally pleasant. There is nothing here to surprise: ?Rudolph? followed by ?White Christmas?, ?Jingle Bells?, ?Chestnuts Roasting Over AN Open Fire? ..... you get the picture...

First off I have to admit that I have never previously been aware of the accolade 'Certified Guitar Player' that was awarded to Tommy Emmanuel in 1999 by the legendary Chet Atkins. However, I will also happily admit that if there was anyone who deserved the title it is Mr Emmanuel ? his playing is quite incredible. From the opening notes of 'Halfway Home' you can hear finger-picking of real delicacy and skill...

In times past I have sampled Tommy Emmanuel's output and I have never been moved to listened to an entire album. Having taken the time to sit down and give my stereo over to the man that has been bestowed the ultimately peculiar (yet official) title of Certified Guitar Player, only now do I fully recognise the phenomenon I have been missing out on...

Historically, there have been a number of interesting attempts to create a "third stream" of sorts merging Country/Western/Bluegrass and Jazz: from the origins of "Western Swing" to the "Hillbilly Jazz" of Vassar Clements, David Grisman's "Dawg" music or the freely improvised pastiches of Eugene Chadbourne and John Zorn (more recently, Bill Frisell has also made a few forays into this territory...

Tommy Emmanuel hails from Australia and started playing guitar at the early age of four, going on to officially begin his professional career at the ripe old age of six! He became a session player in Sydney as a teenager and played on numerous commercials and backed up bands such as Air Supply and Roberta Flack. He also played with giants Eric Clapton, Joe Walsh, Stevie Wonder, Les Paul and his own personal musical hero and inspiration, Chet Atkins, who gave him the title c.g.p...

Though he has shown a mastery and affinity for both electric and acoustic axes, Tommy Emmanuel's Higher Octave debut, Midnight Drive, finds him focusing almost exclusively on warm yet frequently aggressive acoustic melodies, complemented here and there by the raw, plugged-in energy of Robben Ford and Larry Carlton. The overall mix is the kind that smooth jazz lovers find easy to swallow, but offers more bite and adventure than most like-minded releases in the genre...

Tommy Emmanuel has earned a reputation in his native Australia as a master guitarist who dabbles in many different musical styles. Utilizing a number of acoustic and electric instruments, sometimes overdubbed on a single track, it is easy to appreciate his formidable technique, though his original compositions don't leave much of a lasting impression...

The Australian guitar legend's early-'90s albums on EMI and Sony were worldwide hits, but his first real splash onto the American smooth jazz charts was 1997's Midnight Drive on Higher Octave (released internationally as Can't Get Enough). It was one of the year's more popular discs, but rather than follow up with something similar, he continued on with the musically eclectic journey that has always marked his career, doing a Grammy-nominated fingerpicking album with mentor Chet Atkins...
