Toots and the Maytals Reviews

They've tried everything else to make a star of Toots: live LPs in the shops just after the gig; sessions in Memphis; a dynamite appearance in Jamaica's first movie... might as well do an acoustic album. Problem is, Toots' music isn't only a celebration of human spirit, it's an inspiration for the feet. So half the reason why you'd listen to him isn't here. What we get is a relaxed performance of his hits with choogling acoustic guitar, popping congas and purring bass...

is one of the great voices in popular music. His voice has remained timeless since he split from the golden harmonies of "Jerry" Matthias and "Raleigh" Gordon of the Maytals - even if the digital production of his later work has dated. But this acoustic revisit to his vintage hits is such an inspired idea that it's a wonder no one thought of it before...

TMF is in Jamaica. The sun is beaming down, we can hear the waves in the distance and the condensation from our pitcher of rum punch is trickling down and leaving unsightly puddles on the poolside table. Despite a combination of straw hats and factor 50, we're rocking the slightly embarrassing Hawaiian print, awkwardly placed tan lines and bright red noses. Tonight we're heading to a beach party where we'll dance the night away to reggae beats and steel drums.....

Toots Hibbert, with the 1968 single Do the Reggay by his group The Maytals, is credited with giving the genre its name. Now, 36 years later and re-recording all of their greatest hits, Toots and the boys team up with Keith Richards, Bonnie Raitt, Bootsy Collins, Marcia Griffiths, Ben Harper, Ken Boothe, Eric Clapton, Bunny Wailer, No Doubt and even Willie Nelson in what could have been a really bad album of duets...

Frederick "Toots" Hibbert gave reggae its name with his 1968 hit Do the Reggay, which is included on this 12-track best-of compilation. The gruff vocals of Toots - one of the greatest soul singers ever - blow these classics (including Pressure Drop, 54-46 That's My Number, (Take Me Home) Country Roads and Funky Kingston) straight out into the stratosphere. If you don't have a Toots album in your collection, this is the one you want.

After finally winning his first (!) Grammy for 2004's album of all-star duets, True Love, living legend Toots Hibbert - whose golden voice remains intact - picks up where he left off with a couple of guests (Bonnie Raitt on Premature and guitar phenomenon Derek Trucks on the very R'n'B, Hibbert-penned Johnny Coolman). Highlights also include a terrific rocksteady cover of the Ray Charles classic I Gotta Woman and ska classic Guns of Navarone.

Those of you who have seen Shane Meadows' excellent This is England will remember the brilliant opening sequence in which Toots and The Maytals' classic 54-46 Was My Number accompanies the shocking visuals of '80s Thatcherite unrest. It's an exhilarating opening and Meadows lets the song play through in its entirety, reminding you just how bloody good Toots Hibbert and his cohorts are...

"Turn It Over" is an instrumental. So's "Turn It Up." "Chatty Chatty" is a charming throwaway. So's "Dilly Dally." Let's Get It Together" is a message number. So's "Israel Children." "Journeyman" is about just who you'd hope, for better and worse.

In Toots the physical voice is all but equivalent to the artistic "voice," the way that term is applied to poets sometimes, and all its warmth, humor, and vivacity come through here. But what has made Toots doubly impressive is the amazing hit songs his voice was attached to. For starters: "Sweet and Dandy," "5446 Was My Number," "Monkey Man," and "African Doctor...
