Trans-Siberian Orchestra Reviews

Sound: Trans-Siberian Orchestra never seemed to catch my musical likings until this year, when I could really appreciate what I was hearing. This is a group of amazingly talented musicians under the direction of an astounding conductor, well, actually two conductors on when on the road. Every song on this album has a unique tone, style, and movement and all relate to christmas, telling a story throughout the album...

Three words: Christmas rock opera. If I didn't know better, I'd swear this was Jack Black's Tenacious D trying to pull off a seasonal Spinal Tap - it's that over-the-top. The 28-page lyric sheet is prefaced by the 10-page tale of The Lost Christmas Eve, basically a crypto-Christian grab bag of parables patched together to form a modern-day story of the birth of Christ, only set in New York. God's honest truth, you've never heard anything like this...

Sound: Most of this band's material is Christmas music, this being thier only non-Christmas album. The sound is brilliant, they combine classical music with rock, making a very unique sound. In some cases it is their own work, but in other cases, it's Beethoven's composition with a little twist. They even do a Mozart composition. In some cases there is singing, while in others, it is just instrumental. A great blend of all types of music...

For the past few Christmases, Florida headbangers Savatage have been transforming themselves into the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and instead of baking sugar cookies they've been creating stately yuletide rock operas to put under the tree, turning their back on shredding guitars for high-concept subject matter and majestic processionals...

The story of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's third Christmas CD deals with angels visiting New York City, which gives the rock group with orchestra and chorus a chance to draw upon a wide variety of modern music. The jaunty "Christmas Nights in Blue" sounds like Louis Jordan had some influence and is the coolest moment the orchestra has ever offered, while the driving "Christmas Jam" is Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein" with some sleigh bells...
