herein lies the fault of the collectables label's manifesto... why exactly you'd pair sonny & linda's mind-melt burner with what's essentially a slightly above-average sounding late 60s soul-jazz-funk tread (henderson's "people get ready") is quite beyond the scope anyone familiar with the former. regardless, glad black woman is available in a tangible, semi easy to find form. in the pantheon of out-guitar, sharrock can certainly be deemed the grand/god-father...

People Get Ready was the first of two albums cut for Atlantic Records by Freedom Sounds, a nine-piece group put together by trombonist Wayne Henderson of the Jazz Crusaders. Listening to Sketches of Life is something like finding a diamond midway through a box of Cracker Jack. It starts off with some typically easygoing mid tempo Quiet Storm action that offers more cinders than real fire, but then it suddenly explodes with soul, jazz, and fusion--and some of the leader's finest performances this side of the old Crusaders...

During his years with the Jazz Crusaders, he only led two record dates of his own, and it was not until a decade after he left the group that he led his third session.
