Weedeater Reviews

It's easy to compare Weedeater's early output to the bands that inspired them: there are undeniable strains of SLEEP, Electric Wizard, Kyuss and the rest of the stoner/sludge metal milieu in Weedeater's work, especially in ...And Justice for Y'all their first album. Certain bass grooves and transitions bare an uncanny resemblance to those found in SLEEP's "Dragonaut"; there are droning passages which might be mistaken (and with little difficulty) for certain stretches of Kyuss' Welcome to Sky...

Tweet Pass the Brownies.. Weedeater has been around since the early 2000s, bringing their stoned-out , smoke-filled "tough guy" metal to the masses since their inception. Their first album "....And Justice for Y'all" has been remastered for re-release this year. So lets take out the bongs and those special brownies your friend made you last week and let's dive in head first to a fantastic debut album from Cape Fear, North Carolina's own, Weedeater...

You'd be stretching a point to call North Carolina sludge metal trio Weedeater 'famous', but you could nevertheless make a sound argument for 'infamous' or 'notorious'. That is to say, mention of their name - to a certain kind of entrenched metalhead, at any rate - is likely to prompt recollection of certain factoids and/or isolated incidents. Ones which have little or nothing to do with what their music sounds like...

After four years of tribulation, this North Carolina sludge metal troupe is once again chasing the dragon. Dixie Dave is one toe shy after being a bit careless while cleaning his gun, there was much physical injury due to the southern boy penchant for partying, and they all suffered pain and loss in general. Hopefully, at this point they've learned that one should not smoke weed without interruption. I haven't been a huge fan of past albums...

Inciting another collective "ho hum" from the world of stoner metal, droning dirt bags Weedeater offer up a half-hour of unsurprising sludge on fourth effort Jason... The Dragon. From its ridiculous title through to pointless songs that slap a few riffs together, dole out a touch of hoarse screaming and then peter off, this has to be their laziest effort yet. One imagines that if the trio were to phone it in, that would be a major step up from what we're offensively offered here...

Like some warped children's fairytale designed for seriously stoned adults, all sitting around on dirty couches, bongs in hand, following along in their little storybooks, a strange voice begins to deliver the tale of Jason... The Dragon (oof, a bad pun for sure, and perhaps a vague reference to that other stoner dragon Puff...

Sound: In keeping with the "Stoner Metal" Genre, and in general the Southern Lord music label, you would expect Weedeater's first Long Player to be characterized by slow, down-tuned Sabbathian Riffs and almost-scary vocals bathed in an atmosphere of pure doom; and boy, does it ever deliver...

It would be an understatement to say that metal is in vogue right now. Some diehards have derided the trend as indie rockers succumb to "hipster metal" mania. Personally I find it horribly offensive to write off a group as articulate and beautiful as SunnO))) with a snarky tag like that...

I remember seeing cult doom punks Buzzov*en -- back in '94 or '95 I think it was -- their set was a glorious mess of feedback and dirt, culminating in, I believe, the bassist smashing a bottle into his guitar and bleeding everywhere. I thought it was the best show I saw all year. Why do I bring this up......because drone-smokers Weedeater, with leviathan new release God Luck and Good Speed, are led by that selfsame bass player/screamer "Dixie" Dave Collines...
