Yukon Blonde Reviews

We always want a rock revival, or at least they keep coming. The British Invasion invoked the golden era, and garage rock did the same, on through punk to Arcade Fire and beyond. What exactly constitutes the "good old days" is of course always up for grabs, though, and for their part, Yukon Blonde (Jeff Innes, Brandon Scott, Graham Jones, and John Jeffrey) take us back to the late '60s and '70s on their second full-length release, Tiger Talk...

Boosted by one of the finest opening trios - the delightfully exuberant 'My Girl', 'Radio' with its glorious hook and the magnificent single 'Stairway' - we've heard this year, Yukon Blonde's sophomore album Tiger Talk is an utter joy that brings the summer early to your ears. That the rest of Tiger Talk doesn't quite match the aforementioned trio is more a reflection of their brilliance rather than a criticism of what follows...

There has been much buzz around Vancouver, BC's Yukon Blonde and their sophomore LP. Since the release of their Polaris-nominated, self-titled debut, the quartet have been busy releasing EPs and embarking upon lengthy supporting tours. Now they are doing it all over again in support of Tiger Talk. The band said that the record began with some punk-inspired demos that evolved into an album that was "a lot faster," with "a lot more harmonies...

Yukon Blonde's self-titled debut snuck up on many people, who were ultimately won over by the Vancouver, BC band's brilliant vocal harmonies and unabashed embrace of '70s AM rock. While we wait for their next punk rock-inspired full-length, the quartet have offered up this four-track EP, either as a crass stop-gap or as a last ditch effort to shake off the remainders of the sound that brought them to prominence...

The boys in BC's Yukon Blonde have a knack for getting a great groove going between the bass and drums and then settling into it for the length of a three-minute rock song. Add in their sunny multi-part harmonies, hooky guitar leads (with fantastic tone) and dynamic arrangements and, well, you get a spectacularly locked-in live band always bound to get a crowd moving. Their recorded work, however, brings to the foreground slightly dorkier qualities...

This B.C. band of brothers (not real ones, yo) - with hair both long and short, and faces hairy and not - are four young dudes with a '60s-style pop rock jones. Formerly known as AlphaBaby, Yukon Blonde's self-titled debut follows their well-received short player Everything in Everyway released to our ears last fall...

Summary: Clean cut americana for the kids. I really dislike categorizing bands through namedropping others. More often than not, it's a hassle. With Yukon Blonde, it's a pain. Their music is chock full of obvious influences and tributes, and to name them all would ultimately still leave readers with vague ideas of what they sound like. But you know what? We'll call this an exercise in comprehension...

Summary: Lacking both bark and bite, Yukon Blonde make up for their deficiencies by being painfully inoffensive. 1 of 1 thought this review was well written Blandness is a crippling thing. The ability to be inoffensive - a quality that Vancouver indie-trio Yukon Blonde certainly possess - can spoil a lot...

America spends its money on wars and disaster recovery and leaves the Arts to fend for themselves, but the Canadian Government actually gives money to up and coming rock bands. Whether that's right or wrong, it shows a difference of priorities on each side of the 49th parallel. Yukon Blonde makes a pleasant, hook-filled power-pop that combines Canadian self-effacement with a playful glimmer in their eyes...
