Z-Ro Reviews

Avg. Customer Rating:
5.0 (based on 9 reviews)

Z-Ro opens his latest record "Meth" by stating, "That's right nigga - changed my name to Rother Vandross - fuck you old punk ass nigga, nigga!" Excusing his crudeness, it's an apt alter ego for the Mo City Don, who is as recognizable for his deep, smooth crooning as for his gritty hustling sagas...

I'll open this review like countless writers before me by praising Z-Ro and his craft. Z-Ro should be remembered as one of our generation's troubadours; a singer and storyteller who speaks for an often underrepresented and underprivileged sector of society. An especially gifted and technically deft rapper, combining triple-time speed with heady lyrics and a deep delivery, he's most remarkable for his diverse skill set...

When I think of Texas hip hop, I tend to think of two types of artists. The first is the Geto Boys/UGK/E.S.G./Rap-A-Lot sort?rappers and producers raised on funk and soul tunes who came to prominence in the early-90s using distinct elements of those genres in their music. The second is the Lil' Flip/Slim Thug/Swisha House/"tippin' on fo'-fo's" variety?MCs who came of age during the Clinton administration listening to DJ Screw tapes...

Still alive? Well no shit Z-Ro, one would certainly hope so. We ain't heard shit about you getting shot, going to the hospital, and winding up in the morgue. Maybe there are some enemies in your past who might like to see that fate befall you, but Southern hip-hop heads who know you from albums like "The Life of Joseph W. McVey" and"Let the Truth be Told" aren't in any hurry to lay flowers on your coffin...

Prophets of the Dirty South often preach the value of Z-Ro, the greatest Texas kingpin you've never heard of. Unfortunately pleas to pay heed to his word and deed often fall on deaf ears. In the Lone Star State and his hometown of Houston in particular Z-Ro is acknowledged as an all-time great on the level of Nas or 'Pac, but almost no one anywhere else in the U.S. is on his jock...

"All songs wrote and produced by Z-Ro for King of Tha Ghetto Entertainment." On the one hand I'm thrilled by reading this notice on the one-piece insert for Z-Ro's new album "Power." As a reviewer an entirely self-produced album is a blessing because you don't have to second guess yourself and check the liner notes when a beat that sounds like Timbaland is actually The Neptunes or vice versa...

Z-Ro has been one of Houston's elite underground "reality rap" artists since 1998, a fact that may be lost on rap fans who don't follow the Texas scene closely or know much about the "Screwed Up Click" that pledges their allegiance to a sound and style closely associated with DJ Screw, R.I.P...

Retelling Z-Ro's many woes and tragedies could take up this entire review. Listening to any of his CDs makes you want to relate those somber tales, but ultimately the experience that is Z-Ro's music can never be properly conveyed in words. Z-Ro is a modern day bluesman and folk tale purveyor. Sure, Z-Ro's stories are rooted in the truth, but his music has the qualities that will ensure his tales will one day take on a life of their own...

Although the Houston native has been on the rap scene for far more than just a minute, it was last year's "The Life of Joseph W. McVey" that put Z-Ro on the map for rap fans outside the Dirty South. Or did it? Let's be real here, that's the cliche thing to say whenever a popular rapper from Texas or Louisiana or Florida gets national distribution, but it by no means proves people North of the Mason-Dixon buy the shit...
