U2 is Adding Shows to Their Tour at Record Rate

u2It was only last month that U2’s lead singer Bono sent out a New Year’s message saying that he may never be able to play the guitar again. This followed a severe biking accident that broke his shoulder in three places, his left arm in six places, and broke a bone near his left eye. Following the accident, Bono ended up at the hospital, although he says he has no memory of how he got here, where it took doctors three hours to repair the damage. This has led many critics and fans and fear the worst: that the much anticipated U2 tour would be delayed, or worse yet, not ever happen. But luckily, that’s not how it played out.

More Concert Dates Are Being Added to the Tour

Instead, with the announcement of additional dates in Chicago, iconic Irish rockers U2 have increased the number of shows in their upcoming Innocence + Experience world tour to nearly 50. In its original announcement of the tour back in December, before the bike accident, the band confirmed 44 shows in 19 cities around the world. But in recent days, U2 has added additional dates in sold out cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago, London and Barcelona. What’s more, there are now rumors that the band is considering even more shows in additional cities.

The Bike Accident That Started the Rumors

The new tour dates put to rest the rumors that the U2 world tour’s start might be delayed because of that November bicycle accident. Immediately after the accident, the band was forced to postpone a week long residency on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Shortly after that, in a January message, Bono said that his recovery has been more difficult than he thought. “As I write this,” he said, “It’s not clear that I will ever play guitar again.” He then announced that he now has a titanium elbow that may not allow him to play as he once did. But as the May start of the tour draws closer, it’s becoming clear that there will be no postponement. Instead, the band is primed to continue adding shows to the tour as long as demand for tickets remains high.

The Tour Promises to Be Unique

In contrast to many other concert tours, the U2 world tour has booked multiple shows in every city along its route, with some cities featuring as many as five nights of the band’s high-energy brand of rock. The shows will not simply be repeats, notes lead singer, Bono, who said in a statement, “We are going to try to have a completely different feeling from night one to night two…more to be revealed!” The U2 Innocence + Experience tour kicks off on May 14 in Vancouver, BC and features multiple dates in North America and Europe before ending in Paris on November 15.
