Alarm Will Sound Reviews

Michael Gordon's chamber opera "Van Gogh" isn't overtly dramatic in the traditional sense, but it pulses with a distinctive brand of emotional energy that is hard to resist. The libretto, drawn from the painter's letters to his brother Theo, is an exploration of the artist's life - not only the purely aesthetic side (colors, subjects, proportions) but also the practical matters of how to make your way in the world as a creator...

Alarm Will Sound, a young 22-piece new music band featuring voices, strings, woodwinds, and percussionists, received high praise from around the world for their debut release on Cantaloupe featuring the music of Steve Reich. Now the band takes on the music of twisted techno master Aphex Twin on Acoustica. Alarm Will Sound has, with a cadre of ten arrangers, painstaking recreated and rethought Aphex Twin's legendary electronic work for an all-acoustic ensemble...

Often praised as a musical genius, though made obscure by the prickliness of his music, Aphex Twin, the sometimes alter ego of Richard D. James, holds a position high atop the mountain of electronica as an overlord whose prowess serves to validate the entire genre (and ultimately define the IDM subgenre) in the eyes and ears of fellow musicians...

It's tempting to look for an angle when ostensibly "traditional" artists re-interpret music originally conceived for an entirely different context. You wonder if they're making a statement first and thinking about the music second. It can seem as though the artist with a stronger connection to high culture is either extending a hand down to welcome the other half into the club. Or, perhaps they're just having a laugh...

I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical when I first saw this release by Alarm Will Sound. There have been tons of crossover releases (going both ways) in terms of classical artists remaking popular artists and vice-versa. William Orbit tackled the masters with his Pieces In A Modern Style while the work of Radiohead has been transcribed to both classical and solo piano pieces and The Balanescu Quartet got Possessed by Kraftwerk...

We always talked about trying to start a live jungle band, drum and bass played by a REAL band, no synths or laptops, just guitars and bass and drums. Lots of drums. In fact, we spent a lot of time trying to figure out how many drummers you would need, or how insane a drummer it would take to simulate that lightning speed skitter and stutter. So what exactly would it take, in terms of instrumentation to accurately recreate that jungle sound, or say maybe the sound of Aphex Twin...
