Brian McKnight | More Than Words
Entertainment One
by Brent Faulkner
R&B; veteran Brian McKnight continues on the indie route with the
release of third Entertainment One (eOne) effort, More Than Words.
More Than Words is McKnight's 15th studio album. Throughout the course
of the effort, McKnight continues to showcase his musical talents,
serving as the set's executive producer, multi-instrumentalist (bass,
keyboards, guitar, etc.), songwriter, and most importantly, vocalist...

He's tall, dark and handsome, with a voice like crushed velvet, an ability to play almost a dozen instruments and a profitable proclivity to write lyrics that have earned him millions in album sales. Not only has he amassed an impressive list of songwriting, production and collaboration credits, his name has become all but synonymous with romantic R&B. Thanks to his longevity (nearly twenty years worth) and versatility as a performer (stage productions, Broadway, and radio show hosting, etc...

With all honesty, Brian McKnight's albums don't always make themselves at home in my personal collection. However, admittedly upon hearing, "Find Myself In You" months back, there was no doubt that whatever collection it appeared on would become part of my treasure chest. That particular song took me away from today's music scene, sending me to a place and time when melodies danced and lyrics painted a colorful picture. Something in his vocals was vaguely reminiscent of a Marvin Gaye classic...

Okay, I'll admit off the bat that I'm not in Brian McKnight's key demographic group. His albums are clearly not aimed at 40-something year old men. However, for years I've wanted to like his music. Maybe it's because I've respected the pioneering music of Take 6 for so long (his brother Claude is a member and Brian has worked with them often), or maybe because McKnight has teased so long with a great single here and there, at times appearing to be a NextGen Jeffrey Osborne or Peabo Bryson...

A holiday meditation: Why do cats like eating Christmas tree tinsel? Why can't cats fully digest Christmas tree tinsel? Why does some unlucky soul always have to assist the cat in its annual rite of passage? Why does cheddariffic R&B; crooner Brian McKnight keep putting out Christmas albums?

The R&B; veteran's latest disc opens with what amounts to an ad for his syndicated radio show, but elsewhere Evolution of a Man is far less crass: "I just wanna make sure that if we do this, we don't regret it," he sings on "Just a Little Bit," expressing a sentiment rare among the slow-jam set. McKnight's goal has never been to thrill á la younger peers like The-Dream, and occasionally here he could use some edge; "Never Say Goodbye" sounds like bad Peter Cetera...

In a world of boy-toy playas, the amorous Brian McKnight opts for the role of loverman. His "Grown Man Business" even mocks the clumsiness of youth. But though McKnight's maturity gives him character ? and his suede voice never fails to stand out ? Gemini's melodies bear no distinguishing marks. Eventhe most experienced artists can't redeem songs that have no soul.

B.GIFrian McKnight has been fairly prolific since his self-titled debut, releasing a new album exactly every two years since the early '90s and moonlighting as a producer on debuts by the likes of Alicia Keys and Justin Timberlake, but I've yet to review a single album by the R&B; crooner...
