Byron Stripling Reviews

Stripling Now!, a sextet date, should open quite a few ears to its leader. The trumpeter has a winning way on each cut, from the opening "Greasy Livin'," a plunger-muted blues, to his direct, clear-toned interpretation of "I Can't Get Started." He even sings; his masculine ballad sound on "East of the Sun" is no throwaway. On cuts such as "I Want to Be Happy," "Rebop" and "Glasstronic" he and alto man Dave Glasser show fine bebop chops (a la Diz and Bird)...

Trumpeter/vocalist Byron Stripling would have been the perfect choice for a Louis Armstrong celebration, as he can conjure up the spirit of Satchmo as well as anyone, while still maintaining his own identity...

IF I COULD BE WITH YOU is a priceless tribute to the work of Louis Armstrong, performed by Byron Stripling and friends. This session was recorded live in Hamburg, Germany, and is exceptional in sound reproduction. Byron Stripling is a flawless trumpet player as the jazz world knows, and he also adds some of his unique vocals to these songs. Among the songs are "On The Sunny Side Of The Street," "Struttin' With Some Barbecue," "I'm Confessin' That I Love You," "St...

A Most Interesting Tone. Count Basie Band trumpeter Byron Stripling has a tone that is a throwback to a bygone era. He has a vocal style that is the same. His trumpet style is an amalgam of Louis Armstrong, Cootie Williams and Roy Eldridge. Dirty yet precise, Stripling's trumpet blows a blast of fresh air that provides a market foil to the Davis-Marsalis-Roney axis. Stripling's vocal style recalls Armstrong, a tenor Johnny Hartman, and a Nat Cole, a little out of control. Striplingnow...

Satch's 100th. The music on this disc has been mined from two previous Nagel-Heyer releases: We Love You Louis! ? The New York All-stars Play The Music Of Louis Armstrong (N-H 029) and Oh, Yeah? The New York All-stars Play The Music Of Louis Armstrong (N-H 046). Both discs document live recordings made the Congress Centrum and Hanse-Merkur Auditorium, respectively, both in Hamburg, Germany (home of Nagel-Heyer)...

This is the 3rd album for former Lionel Hampton Big Band lead trumpet Bryon Stripling for the Nagel Heyer label. Joined by jazz stalwarts Wycliffe Gordon, Bill Charlap and the ageless, Frank Wess, Stripling focuses more on ballad standards than on his previous releases revealing a soft side to his playing. The blues inflected arrangement of Lover Man, for example, allows him to wax pretty with his full tone. Faster paced material has been forsaken...

Byron Stripling is a confident trumpeter who is unafraid of being compared to earlier greats on his instrument; he delves into time-tested standards of the swing era as well as the music of Dizzy Gillespie, yet produces a fresh approach in every case. With pianist Bill Charlap, drummer Dennis Mackrel, either Peter Washington or Ira Coleman on bass, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, and tenor saxophonist Frank Wess joining him, Stripling's lively playing is a delight throughout the sessions...

For many years Stripling has been a lead trumpeter for the Count Basie, Woody Herman and Lionel Hampton big bands, so it's about time he led his own session. He's got a talented back-up trio with emerging pianist Bill Charlap, who is an enormous asset on this CD all the way through, solid bassist Peter Washington, and Basie drummer Dennis Mackrel. Alto saxophonist Dave Glasser and tenor great Frank Wess appear on select tracks, Glasser doing some arranging...
