How many of us are waiting on a new Sunny Day Real Estate record? In 2009, we were duped and still, I bet there's quite a few. While it doesn't look like there's much promise to harp on, at least the band shells out a Record Day treat on a Circa Survive split which serves to reignite those small glimmers of hope for fans of the emo patriarchs...

During the first few bars of opening track 'Birth of the Economic Hit Man', a creeping wall of familiar ethereal guitar tones, moody riffs and fitful percussion begins to build, about to be danced upon by Anthony Green's unmistakable androgynous wail. Now on their fourth full-length, it's apparent from this moment right through to the final fade-out of "Violent Waves" that Circa Survive have held on to their ability to surf constantly at the breaking point of anticipation...

My company and I arrived at the spacious Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel venue in Providence, RI, just as opener Now, Now were finishing up what I believed to be their opening song, the breathy slow-burner "Prehistoric." I've been following them since their auspicious 2008 EP, Not One, But Two, and watching them grow, supporting notable tours (like this one) and releasing more widely acknowledged, favorably reviewed records has been nice to witness, to say the least...

4/5 Prog-punk pioneers Circa Survive are nothing if not ambitious and the band's fourth album sees them further stepping away from their Warped Tour roots to craft a disc that's teeming with emotion without falling on emo clichés...

We've seen this movie before. Band reaches moderate success on indie label, signs to major, releases major label debut, album gets little to no push, band and major separate mutually. It's the most predictable cycle of events since every Katherine Heigl movie ever. But the cycle's most recent addition, Circa Survive, isn't your typical band. Their major label debut Blue Sky Noise was a killer album - a staggering cornucopia of everything you loved from their first two albums...

Sound: The sound is something that you can get so sucked into immediately. The guitars create such a spacey atmosphere of sound that I can barely believe that guitars are making half the noises on this album. The rhythm section is tight and talented. People have called Circa Survive prog-punk. That is a pretty accurate title I suppose. They sound like they could be Thom Yorke from Radiohead's more coherent side project...

Sound: 'On Letting Go', Circa Survive's sophomore effort sounds more like they've been doing this for ages. They really know their sound, and how to keep it interesting throughout the entire course of the album. The drummer Steve Clifford is very tech throughout the entire album, and he does it without sounding like he's trying too hard...

Circa Survive's latest album had a 4-20 release, which I'm sad to report, is where the fun ends for this album. The lyrics are depressing, the music is slow and heavy alternative stadium rock, and never ever does the band let slip the tiniest show of irony. The album sounds old but without any of the retro cool. This album sounds like the generic new rock music they play on the Edge (Toronto), but from about 6 or so years ago...
