Da Brat Reviews

After eight years away, it really does feel like a return from the dead. Hip-Hop's first female solo artist to go platinum, Shawntae Harris b/k/a Da Brat, seemed to disappear from the spotlight virtually overnight. After a disappointing performance on 2003's "Limelite, Luv & Niteclubz" her life and career began a slow and inexorable spin, getting more and more out of control...

Though Da Brat triesto come off as a hard-toking junior G, Anuthatantrum is morebluster than menace, sounding about as scary as a schoolyardboast. In fact, if it weren't for the funky foundation ofJermaine Dupri's tuneful, efficient backing tracks, these hissyfits would be unlistenable. Maybe next time she'll hold herbreath until she turns blue ? leaving us with a record that's 100percent Dupri.

Da Brat-Tat-Tat-Tat. Rocking microphones since 1994, this gangstress of hip-hop has had a lot of obstacles to overcome. Due to her close association with Jermaine Dupri and several cameos with Kris-Kross, her name (and appearance) seemed all too apt for those who took her lightly. Then as her style and appearance matured, those same rap fans were stunned when she showed off a gorgeous physique - which became yet another reason to hate...

Representin for the six-oh-six-fo'-fo', Chicago's quick tonguedrap terror who lately has gotten more press for her fly dressesthan her fly raps has decided to throw weight down and put hergame AND her city back on the map with "Unrestricted"."Intro" is definitely a step in the right direction - the highspeed duet with fellow zip code native Twista and drastic highpowered indictment of "you BITCHES" by Millie Jackson show thatshe's not afraid to blow up the spot...

There's plenty of Da Brat's usual funky, staccato rap style on Unrestricted, her follow-up to 1996's Anuthatantrum. But Unrestricted -- which features guest twiddlers such as Timbaland joining resident producer Jermaine Dupri -- is all about playing the field. Grown up but still attitudinal, Da Brat manages to sound as sultry as her R&B; soul sisters without deigning to play the sex kitten...

An, uh, adaptation of MC Luscious' "Boom! I Got Your Boyfriend" demonstrates more than any other track on Limelite, Luv & Niteclubz that Da Brat has done anything but mature since her third album. "Boom" -- and much of what precedes it and follows it -- sees Da Brat being as lewd and raunchy and nasty as she's ever been, with her head still full of smoke and her mouth full of expletives that are always at the ready to spring forth...
