DJ Logic Reviews

Avg. Customer Rating:
5.0 (based on 9 reviews)

I endorse the notion of turntablist as jazzman, and DJ Logic's too professional and smart not to make a solid CD. Still, I need more mood, more song structure or more crazy technique to keep this from drifting to the background.

And it is, indeed, something of an anomaly. DJ Logic's musical palette pretty much spaning the entire spectrum of popular music throwing in a bit of jazz here, a bit of house there, a bit funk, some drum n' bass, a bit of dub... and all under a backbone of hip-hop and scratch DJing. How did things get to be so all over the shop? Well, Logic was raised amongst the eighties hip-hop culture of the Bronx before getting involved in bands that fused his turntable skills into the live set-up...

Through his affiliation with funky jam-band chameleons Medeski, Martin and Wood, DJ Logic (Jason Kibler) has been instrumental in bringing jazz improvisation to hip-hop (and vice versa). A highly in-demand turntablist among New York's avant-jazz set, Logic also has worked with guitarist Vernon Reid in Yohimbe Brothers, whose 2002 album Front End Lifter displayed the duo's eclectic tastes and diverse skills, and with Charlie Hunter and Bobby Previte on Groundtruther's Longitude...

This DJ-innovator seems totally confident switching up genres and blending techniques. Like a trip around the world, this album is a passport through space and time, from a soul loop to chopped-up French accordion, rock guitar to afrobeat and hip-hop. Logic's laid-back style is completely versatile.

Allow me to lend you a hand on this one:Anomaly n. 1. something that deviates from the norm or from expectations2. something strange and difficult to identify or classifyAptly titled, The Anomaly delivers soulful expressions laid out in a musical gumbo that will reach the depths of its listeners the way Hannibal enjoys a nice fava bean sauce with his his dinner guest...

Influence, the bastard. How do you know what to trust and what to reject? DJ Logic's beat-heavy leanings absorb all fodder on his third album, Zen of Logic. Dub, soul, jazz, blues, twangy guitar chords, afro-funk, spacey hip-hop -- all intertwined by Logic's skilled, timely scratching. Logic has, after all, joined forces with a Rainbow Coalition of forward-thinking artists, from Prince Paul and the Allman Brothers to John Mayer, Mos Def, B.B. King and Medeski, Martin & Wood...

DJ Logic, a.k.a. Jason Kibler, came of age in the Bronx during the time of hip-hop's birth in the early 80s, and has come to occupy an interesting niche in the world of new creative music. He came up as a mover-and-shaker in the Black Rock Coalition and went on to work with Medeski, Martin & Wood, Graham Haynes, and other artists interested in bringing hip-hop's sonic innovations into their jazz-based work...
