It's a scary world we live in, people. Very scary, in fact. People are becoming afraid of beards, the future is uncertain due to the self-inflicted unbalancing of nature, the power of economics are shifting dramatically and if you're out of a job these days, well, good luck.Fortunately there's music, good music, excellent music and Europe. Not the sorry excuse for a United European Whatever Force, led by a Belgian president, but the band...

After the global success of The Final Countdown, guitarist John Norum jumped ship, rocking the Swedes' world. While they would never see such heady chart heights again, their fourth studio set, 1988's Out Of This World, with new guitarist Kee Marcello on board, was a stratospheric set of a dozen imperious rockers...

Europe's last studio album, "Last Look At Eden", found favour with me and a lot of you and consequently ended at # 12 in our album poll of the year 2009. To come straight to the point, I'm not sure if the new album, "Bag Of Bones", will do as well. The reason? It's a far too bluesy affair for the melodic rockers in all of us. Of course the band members may be proud of it and producer Kevin Shirley did an excellent job, but a lot of time is needed to get into the material...

Sound: One of the most influential classic rock bands of all time, Swedish supergroup Europe has dominated the world for over 30 years with their signature, futuristic, and experimentally unique music. Europe became internationally infamous for their synth-dominated sound, groundbreaking guitar playing, and the unrivaled vocals from frontman Joey Tempest, which ruled superhits "The Final Countdown", "Carrie", and "Rock The Night"...

Following the release of their critically acclaimed 8th studio album, "Last Look At Eden" (2009), Europe embarked on a massive tour playing an impressive series of live concerts around the European continent. Legendary rock photographer Denis O'Regan has joined the band on this tour, taking a massive lot of pictures...

"...this new version of Europe definitely proves that some things grow better with age." When I reviewed the EP version of Europe's latest endeavor, "Last Look At Eden," I said that it warranted checking out the iconic 80's band again. Well, after hearing the full version of their new album, I definitely recommend it for anyone who likes heavy rock and 80's fashioned mainstream metal...

"...while there's still enough stadium rock sound to the songs, those who might have sneered at the mention of Europe may just be pleasantly surprised." Releasing a teaser EP for an upcoming full-length album is always a risky move, as many people will assume all the songs worth hearing are on it, and won't bother buying the album. But in the case of Europe, distributing an EP version of "Last Look At Eden" was probably a very wise move...

Sound: WARNING: this review(justifiably, I might add) contains lots of over-used and much repeated superlatives... Europe manages to combine the finest hard rock with some damned fine catchy choruses, with the result a stunning masterpiece of an album. The guitar work is excellent, with plenty of riffs to induce spontaneous headbanging ("All Or Nothing" cough cough), and lead guitar so inspiring that even God's jaw cannot fail to drop...

It's a good time to be an '80s rock act, and it's an even better time to be signed to Sanctuary, who seem to be holding the lighter aloft on behalf of these axe-wielding veterans. I blame The Darkness - ever since their rise to the top last year a whole host of bands have reappeared, flying in their wake.So now it's the turn of Europe. Seemingly destined for pop game show questions and providing Blackburn Rovers with music to frighten their opponents, they are, in fact, back...
