Har Mar Superstar Reviews

Because of the popularity for our conversational format we debuted a couple of weeks ago with fIN's album Wasted on the Living, we thought that we'd give the format another shot. Tom and Joel sit down to talk about Har Mar Superstar's throwback album Bye Bye 17. Overall Joel rated this as a 7 and Tom gave this sensual man-beast 9 starsies. We settled on 8. Enjoy. Tom: You know I'm OCD about categorizing my music. And I get pissed that R&B is not separated into sub genres...

Har Mar Superstar was a man for the early to mid '00s, when his single-entendre R&B earned him a fleeting notoriety, somewhere between electroclash provocateur and indie-rock semi-celebrity. His fifth album, however, is worth a listen. 'Bye Bye 17' ditches raunch and irony for old-fashioned songwriting and something approaching sincerity, and the results are kind of amazing...

Goto commentsLeave a commentShare Spreading the Groovy Revolution Let's all take a moment to appreciate the type of delightful revival sounds of 2013. Disco, soul, and pop funk are fully back in fashion to accompany our fringey shirts and platform boots. While J.T., Robin Thicke and Daft Punk dominate the commercial corner, Har Mar Superstar's Bye Bye 17 is hot off the presses - and ready to spread the groovy revolution down into the indie market...

"Is this guy for real?" "What exactly is his problem?" "Why does he have to be naked?" - all valid questions upon one's first exposure to Har Mar Superstar. After his 2000 debut, Har Mar catapulted to international semi-fame with the 2002 album You Can Feel Me, complete with a rather bizarre appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel show where he did "Power Lunch" and Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke"...

Tears of a Clown After a four-year hiatus, Har Mar Superstar, looking like the bedraggled fraternal twin of Lena Dunham, has finally reemerged onto the musical landscape with his latest album, Bye Bye 17, proving that if nothing else, the career of Sean Tillmann's alter ego will be remembered for his undying tenacity. It must have been quite a feat to hang on to his chunky, funky, oversexed, Ron Jeremy-lookalike one-trick pony, as it has bucked and reared over the last decade...

Har Mar Superstar is known widely for his flamboyant antics and overly sexualized lyrics--some even propose that Sean Tillman's albums are a joke. Bye Bye 17 doesn't strike that way at all. The 10-song album explores love in despairing, hilarious and sometimes weird ways. No matter the lyrical content, Tillman's silken, Otis Redding-reminiscent vocals anchor funky, horn-driven R & B beats that match the swagger of Motown.

Okay, I plead guilty to a certain amount of stupidity and blind faith. I admit that the only reason I was interested in Har Mar Superstars' self-titled debut is because of geography. You see, I am big fan of the Twin Cities, and I have a virtually uncritical love of all things Minnesotan...

"Lady's be ready to grind" says Har Mar Superstar aka tubby white porn star look-alike Harold Martin Tillman. 'You Can Feel Me' is Har Mar's second album and this time he's called in all the favours from members of Busy Signals and the Faint to provide the slick beats and sleazy synths. Live this guy is one of the most entertaining individuals on the planet, mostly because you can't believe that he's got the bottle to sing his swing beat soul with such attitude...

Dark Touches is Sean Tillmann's (A.K.A Har Mar Superstar) 4th album. It sounds as though he has grown up slightly since his last offering, although the lyrics are still firmly tongue in cheek and littered with innuendo. At one point he asks the lady in question if he can taste her apple sauce. Is this the way to win a woman's heart or just the Har Mar way? Either way conjures up an image I would rather forget...
