Sebastian is as on for this solo debut as he ever was for the Lovin' Spoonful, and when he's on, the hummability quotient of his songs is dizzying--a good half of these imprint themselves upon impact. But just like Spoonful albums used to, this drags in the second half, and I feel vaguely let down. Maybe it's the gently paternalistic sexism of "She's a Lady" and "What She Thinks About." Or maybe it's his taste in T-shirts.

Sebastian makes the mistake of beginning this with two great blues, after which his own funk and mawk sound lifeless. This is unfair. They're really only feckless--or careless, like his love. The title suite (or whatever it is) is the tie-dyed mind at its sloppiest.

Since acoustic and roots music have always formed the base of their respective musics, it seems natural for John Sebastian and David Grisman to cut an album for Acoustic Disc (Grisman's label). The pairing is similar to that of Dylan and Happy Traum way back in 1971 for several nice acoustic duos at the end of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2. In both instances, one gains the impression of two friends jamming just for the fun of it, a back-porch authenticity re-created in the studio...

A wide variety of musical forms can be found here, from reggae to Appalachian hill music, from city rock to country roll. And while this sounds like a hodgepodge, John Sebastian manages to pull it off with his usual aplomb. Highlights include "Dixie Chicken" (made famous by Little Feat), "Sitting in Limbo" (from the Jimmy Cliff songbook), and Sebastian's version of "Stories We Could Tell" (already made famous by the Everly Brothers).
