Vocally, Liv is almost James's twin but not quite--he adds a touch of depth to the lissome drawl and subtracts all wow and flutter. Since what makes James unique is also what makes him repulsive, I find Liv more likable but less interesting--especially given his songwriting, which this best-of, drawn from his three early '70s LPs, makes the best of. I ask you, what good is a funny voice without a sense of humor?

For Bicycle, Livingston Taylor assembled a diverse backing group (which features his brother James) and dug into a set of songs that were rootiser and more eclectic than much of his previous work. Taylor tries his hand at the blues and country, jazz and folk on Bicylce. The results are mixed -- Taylor is at his best when he keeps his ambitions modest, since that reflects the size of his gift -- but they are enjoyable, particularly when the melodies are sweet...

It would be difficult not to compare Livingston Taylor's self-titled 1970 debut to his brother's second solo release, Sweet Baby James, as the latter certainly brought attention to the former, but the Jon Landau-produced disc crafted in Macon, GA, is a world unto itself. Ten originals by Taylor along with one cover, the Earl Greene and Carl Montgomery country standard "Six Days on the Road," make for a pleasant listen...

Ten years after his Top 30 hit "I Will Be in Love With You," Livingston Taylor comes up with an album that has all the brightness of that song and the Top 40 "First Time Love" from 1980. The amazing thing about this artist is that he continually crafts top-notch albums that are highly entertaining, but has not connected with an audience on the same level as his brother, James, Carole King, or other mainstream soft rock artists...
