Lloyd Reviews

Lloyd is one of contemporary R&B's gentler and more textured singers, something producer Polow da Don takes full advantage of on King Of Hearts, which treads a fine line between charming and cringe-worthy...

No contemporary R&B singers approximate the elusive stomach-butterfly rush of infatuation as consistently as Lloyd. "Lay It Down", King of Hearts' peak moment and a lead single that predates the record by nearly a year, is an exemplar: Its innocent, almost naïve earnestness is married to a preternatural sense for R&B vocal acrobatics, giving dimension and believability to his devotion...

The last ten years have been strange for male R&B royalty. While rap has for the most part held steady, with Jay-Z, Kanye and Eminem forming a triumvirate leadership, R&B has undergone more changes than a Beverly Hills trophy wife. The OGs have been unable to maintain the lead they once enjoyed; Usher stumbled with Here I Stand and only now seems to be regaining his footing and even the almighty R. Kelly isn't the hitmaking machine he was a few years ago...

The title of Lloyd's fourth album, King of Hearts, boldly announces Interscope's intent to make R&B; royalty of the long B-listed singer. His two biggest rivals, Trey Songz and Chris Brown, both passed Lloyd over in the pipeline to stardom, and they both do forgettable cameo work here, offering Lloyd a polite, if unenthusiastic, welcome to the V.I.P. section...

Lloyd took a break from his usual seduction routine on 2009's Like Me: The Young Goldie EP, a free mini-album that played off the oddness of his slithering, feathery voice. The EP's dark, confessional tone demonstrated a range the singer hadn't previously hinted at, and it might have made a thrilling template for a full-length if he'd opted to continue down that path. But Lloyd isn't really the tortured type...

We are figuratively and literally introduced to R&B crooner Lloyd on his new release, Street Love. No he is no newcomer to the game, but instead of just running with the big dogs, Lloyd has taken his place at the head of the pack. "Street Love" is a hip-hop soul amalgam with steady heart-pounding grooves, and Lloyd is a pleasing new star on the music scene...

Roll out the red carpet, everybody! Here comes one of the best new groups ofthe late 90's. Lloyd is jumping intothe spotlight via Organic Records. Lloyd is a new modern rock/pop group who blend great vocals with acoustic and electric guitars to deliverone of the best, if not the best, discs of '98 (my apologies to Big Tent, Common Children, and Skillet)...

The best cuts on Lloyd Polite's second album, 2007's Street Love, perfected a particularly dreamy strain of lovers' R&B; on Lessons In Love, he continues to mine this fertile territory. Lyrically, Polite rarely strays far from a seducer's template, but the way in which he sells the cliche is compelling. Soft of voice and light of touch, Polite is a languid, subtle performer who invests his mellifluous sweet nothings with an ambivalent distance - shimmering just out of reach...

Lloyd Polite is blessed with a bright, soulful falsetto ? the kind ofvoice that can elevate even mediocre material. Unfortunately, he'sforced to demonstrate that talent all too often on his third LP Lessons in Love. For themost part, this is a bland blur of midtempo grooves and sub-R. Kellymetaphors: On "Sex Education," he's a pervy teacher, while "Year of theLover" ("Girl, watch me cook until you get nice and tender.... I'mholding you hostage") makes him sound more like Hannibal Lecter...
