Mc Lars Reviews

Many of you who were once in high school (or who perhaps are right now) think of William Shakespeare, Herman Melville and Edgar Allan Poe as some crusty old white dudes who died centuries ago. I see you in my mind's eye turning the pages and yawning, thinking these people have no relevance to a 21st century life, an era of internet and smart phones and iPads. Sorry to say it but you couldn't be more wrong...

When firing on all cylinders, this thing they call nerdcore is that rare musical subclass that seems to utterly defy the standard critical rubric. Trying to parse an artist like MC Lars for subtext is to either miss the point or commit the critical fallacy of heaping scorn upon something simply for being what it is; holding him artistically accountable for polluting the world with dumb music is dubious...

Let's make one thing clear - if you're expecting another 'This Gigantic Robot Kills' with it's bouncy, happy-go-lucky songs look elsewhere. MC Lars' latest release, 'Lars Attacks!', has a distinctly heavier, darker and more serious feel to it. The record is still littered with the occasional lighthearted track, like 'Mike Russo Cut Your Hair' and the impossibly cute stand out track, 'Summer Camp Love'...

Where do I start with a MC Lars album review? To begin such a task, as analysing his latest efforts in the form of 'This Gigantic Robot Kills', it is often best to highlight the album's main genre. However, in my first impressions of a confusing manner, MC Lars crams in as much as possible into the 14 track record that continue his strive against mainstream stereotypes that are encountered in everyday life...

Like a lot of bands and artists at the moment, humourous laptop rapper MC Lars has got into the Christmas spirit with his new EP "The Green Christmas". The EP starts off with "I'm Dreaming of a Green Christmas" with signature Christmas slieghbells before a punk rock chorus kicks in with guest vocals from Jaret Reddick from Bowling The Soup. "Guitar Hero Hero (Beating Guitar Hero Doesn't Make You Slash)[feat...

MC LARS (the graduate) I know this cd has been out for a while but it still rules. Yeah he's white but does that matter, he still flows like a mad man. The songs are not about what is typicaly found in hip hop and or rap. It is geared to our genereation as he says "the I generation" The beats are basic but cover alot of ground from break beats to ones that are simular to 80's hip hop. Its has a comedy feel to the cd, not like Weird al, but it is mocking hip hop. To put it simple its geek rap...

Of my favorite things to do in life, laughing definitely makes my top five (probably sandwiched between going to shows and eating sushi). Which is good because most things - even the most inappropriate or macabre - invariably elicit a hearty giggle from this reviewer. My propensity for laughter no doubt benefits MC Lars and his self described "post-punk laptop rap" because, in lieu of a good sense of humor or a love of the ridiculous, this album could easily be relegated to coaster status...

Q: What do Edgar Allen Poe, white rap, and Piebald have in common? A: MC Lars. Fusing white bread hip-hop and emo automatically makes MC Lars the white-rap savior of the dork population. However, his tactics tear away at the necessary street-cred backbone of hip-hop, ultimately undermining the seriousness of his commentary. On disc opener, "iGeneration," he begins his trend of being too cheesy to be taken seriously...
