Michael Bolton Reviews

One is hard pressed to find a Christmas album from a top notch musician that doesn't include at least two -- if not more -- original songs stuck on in the hope of creating another lasting classic. That Michael Bolton's A Swingin' Christmas is comprised entirely of well-known carols and holiday standards is a testament that he no longer needs such gimmickry to put out a quality CD...

Ah, Mr. Bolton who various mothers about the land swoon over and everyone else makes mild murmurings at. And others still mutter 'pillock' under their breath, but we don't listen to them. The man has decided it would be a good idea to release a whole load of Sinatra songs, which frankly is redundant as nobody but Sinatra and possibly Frank Sinatra Jnr. could ever do them better. Oh, all right Jaimie Cullum and Eva Cassidy can. And the cast of Family Guy. And any mildly drunken Sinatra fan...

When Michael's golden-throating about a white Christmas, he's probably lamenting the greying of what is left of his disappearing locks (once a proud lion mane mullet!). It's a long fall, but what better way to smack rock bottom than with a sappy collection of tired Yuletide standards? Still desperately trying to bud his way into the classic crooners lineup - company he has no business joining - Bolton should be boltin' after this one.

Michael Bolton has outstripped longtime record-holder Linda Ronstadtas the least sensitive interpreter of R&B; songs ever to go platinum.Time Love & Tenderness' ham-handed rendition of the Percy Sledge classic"When a Man Loves a Woman" ranks in wretched excess of phrasing andabsence of emotional substance with the 1988 Bolton botch of OtisRedding's "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay...

The covers album of pre-rock standards is generally the last refuge of the scoundrel and, for those whose image of Michael Bolton is fixed in his early-1990s incarnation (over-haired, over-emoting and over here), the idea of him delivering a collection of songs made famous by Frank Sinatra doesn't exactly inspire hope. Such cynicism, however, would be misplaced. Because, unlike many other such projects, this is actually an impressive and consistently entertaining enterprise...

Sound: Normally, I'm a metal fan, but I honestly picked up this CD as a joke. I got it for 6 bucks at a used CD store, mainly as a joke, but when I listened to it, I was blown away. His lyrics, his music, and general sound are captivating, and even if you have a black, metal-loving heart, this CD is worth a try. His style is a soft to heavy love song type, similar to Elton John. Believe me, this is worth the money...

Dumping on Michael Bolton is almost too easy ? he sets himself up. Even though he can write his own anemic white-soul songs, the Eighth Wonder of the Curls has hammered out a career remaking familiar soul hits with his hernia-patient singing. And now that he's finally a star after years in the wings, Bolton isn't taking any chances: Timeless (The Classics) is an entire album of cover versions, making it one of the safest follow-ups to a hit album in history...

Absolutely amazing was my initial response after listening to this CD twice! Michael Bolton not only pulls it off singing a tribute to Sinatra with the Sinatra big band sound, he makes every song he performs dynamic, intimate and true to the Sinatra idea of what a song should be. This is big band music at its finest. The big band includes 17 horns and 35 string players. There are 12 songs in the collection...
