Nazareth is a Scottish hard rock band, founded in Dunfermline, Scotland, in 1968, that had several hits in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s, and established an international audience with their 1975 album Hair of the Dog. Perhaps their best-known hit single was a cover of the Felice and Boudleaux Bryant penned ballad, "Love Hurts, in 1975. The band continues to record and tour. The news surrounding this album, the 23rd from Nazareth overall, is that it is in all likelihood the last to feature the whisky-soaked vocal styling of Dan McCafferty, the band's long-standing lead singer who is now experiencing ill health. Reading a little deeper into that, with McCafferty having to call it a career, bassist Pete Agnew will be the last original member standing, meaning that this is probably the swansong release for Nazareth, period...

Though relatively recent (both the DVD and CD were given separate releases in 2002), this is nevertheless a very welcome addition to Salvo's series of Nazareth reissues. True, the format is tried, tested and somewhat tired: the band performs their greatest hits in front of a more-or-less "home crowd", but this set is proof that predictable need not mean uninspired. Indeed, the warmth and skill on display puts Homecoming up with the band's best live recordings...

Sound: The sound on this album is pretty impressive, it is arguably, the best album Nazareth has ever had. If you compare this album with, for example, some of their early 70's albums, then the sound way better and cooler (thanks to Rankin's guitar work, but it doesn't mean that Manny Charlton is a bad guitarist). The music styles, of course, are Hard Rock, Arena Rock, Heavy Metal (here and there). // 9 Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics sound very inspired, and serious...

On the face of it, this 69-song selection from one of Scotland's finest and most underrated rock acts is a boon for followers. As well as 40 studio cuts, there are 20 BBC session numbers and a further nine unissued studio tracks. But while they offer new insights into the band's work over the last 40-odd years, it's a shame that there wasn't room for other rarities, unreleased mixes and a more balanced overview...

Ballzier than Zeppelin, yet safer than Sabbath, Nazareth was a powerful force on the international scene during their heyday but never quite made it to rock's proverbial "Champagne Room." However, despite marginal record sales, the Scottish hard-rock combo did build a solid reputation on the road as a "must-see" live act. Along with such contemporaries as Blue Oyster Cult, Rainbow, and Foghat, Nazareth consistently filled concert arenas from coast to coast throughout the 1970s...

It would have been easy to crucify Nazareth for being those born-again-and-again old dogs rockin' for God (see When Jesus Comes to Save the World Again) who don't seem to accept their undying has-been status. Singer Dan McCafferty and bassist Peter Agnew have jammed together since 1968... does Love (still) Hurt after all these years? For Christ's sake, this is the Scottish band's 22nd studio album in over four decades...

It could be said that Dunfermline rock stalwarts Nazareth have released too many live albums now - but that certainly wasn't the case in 1981. Oddly, despite their always-formidable reputation as a live unit of some 10 years or more, 'Snaz was the first record to capture their stage act for posterity. In some ways, the timing could have been better - though the preceding Malice In Wonderland and Fool Circle were solid efforts, the band were a long way from their mid-70s heyday...

"'The Newz' is not an album for fans of extreme metal, but the bluesy and southern rock feel makes it an excellent choice for fans of classic bands such as Creedence Clearwater Revival, Tom Petty, and even at times, AC/DC." While many may only recognize Nazareth as the band responsible for the 1970's ballad "Love Hurts," this Scottish band has been a mainstay in the European industry for longer than many readers have drawn breath...

Sound: Nazareth have a very unique sort of Classic Rock sound, especially in this record. For years I have described them as the "Scottish Led Zeppelin" which is accurate as Nazareth originated in Scotland. The best thing about this record, is that it proves that even the simplest rhythm figures still make amazing songs. Not a single part of this album is difficult to play on any of the instruments...
