Neon Trees Reviews

?????????? With an angst-laden and often humorous examination of love, courting, and sex in the digital age, Neon Trees' third studio album Pop Psychology delivers a barrage of catchy hooks and emotional content. While their sound exudes a sort of bubble-gum pop fun well timed for summer release, it comes in a form listeners will be familiar with for the most part...

On their two hit singles - 2010's "Animal" and 2012's "Everybody Talks" - Neon Trees refashioned post-Strokes dance rock into unshakable radio pop. If the Utah band was from New York or L.A., its slick simulations of neo-New Wave might seem cynical. But there's something sweet about kids from more or less the middle of nowhere getting their little piece of modern rock. They're not Foster the People, they're everyday people...

If you're not like me, you probably know at least something about Neon Trees prior to hearing their sleek sophomore album Picture Show. I, on the other hand, have a bit of distain in radio and have a hard time tuning into anything on television. But aside from what popularity Glee helped shine on the super sweet melodies of "Animal", Neon Trees is very much a band poised to further their break into the mainstream...

"I'm sick of people saying rock 'n' roll is dead," howls Neon Trees vocalist Tyler Glenn on "Teenage Sounds," the second song on his band's sophomore album, Picture Show. On its face, it's a puzzling declaration, given that the band's ubiquitous 2010 hit "Animal" sent them to the head of Top 40 programmers' playlists due to its peppy pop charm...

Given that it arrives almost a full 12 months after its US release, it's no surprise that the debut LP from Utah pop-rockers Neon Trees feels somewhat out of place in 2011's mainstream, where urban acts from both sides of the Atlantic dominate. Returns later this year from Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers will position radars back onto guitars and tattoos - which is fortunate, as it's unlikely that this album will do much to shift attentions away from innumerable Artist A featuring Artist...

Any claim seems possibly, even logically true, providing you add two words to the assertion: '...in America'. It's that wacky and wonderful nation where the Terminator became a state governor. It's the place where Two And A Half Men is the most popular sitcom. And it's the place where Neon Trees were able to sell a million copies of their single. That's six zeroes. It's an astounding fact matched by an astounding debut album, Habits...

Summary: A catchy deviation of The Killers without the majority of that band's problems...

Last year, the Killers plucked this Utah quartet from obscurity by bringing them on tour. As if in repayment, Neon Trees' debut plays like a ham-fisted hommage to their Vegas buddies, down to the surging synths and "whoa-oh" chorus of their single, a scoop of dance-rock mac 'n' cheese called "Animal." Other tracks wrap sparkling keyboards around angsty melodies and lyrics like "I'd love but don't know how to...

Sound: It does not come as a huge surprise that Neon Trees was chosen to open many of The Killers' North American dates back in 2008. While the Utah natives are beginning to craft a style of their own, there are still several songs on their debut full-length record Habits that follow in the footsteps of their established predecessors. A nod to the 1980's is present on the 8-track CD, with synthesizers usually taking a front seat in the mix...
