Genre: Rock Year: 2003 Country: USA Official Site: Phantom Planet Details: Tracks & Audio Label: Sony When a song is catchy, so catchy that it drains my brain of useful knowledge and leaves you a melody-mumbling zombie, it usually doesn't last long. I quickly tire of it. I like the album, I like the songs, I wear them out and I move on. When a song isn't catchy, when it doesn't grab me, I can return to it later...

Good-looking, wealthy boys that sound like art-school dropouts are all the rage in rock and roll these days. Phantom Planet is no different. Their self-titled third release thrusts the L.A. band into the world of The Strokes and The White Stripes--a place where jagged, noisy guitar lines funk out along to drum-machine inspired flourishes. The sound is raw, sensual and sometimes grating. It works for Phantom Planet...

At times L.A.'s Phantom Planet remind of a friendlier, less remote version of The Strokes, at others of a better fed, full band White Stripes, and at still others a less yelpy, sunny-side-of-the-West-Coast Hot Hot Heat. Noisy, asymmetrical pop is their big sweaty bag of nuts, and they sound like they're having a helluva good time chomping them. This, their sophomore, is dirty-kneed bouncy garage rock with punky blues fingers stirring the pot...

As the band picture indicates, there are multiple personalities at work here. Phantom Planet used to be straight-ahead pop, but here they branch out in all directions. Choppy guitars, drum machines and a vitriolicMark E. Smith-style vocal, a Cure-ish synthesized love goth piece, a crackly bit of White Stripes bare-bones rock, and on it goes - there is something here to appease any radio format...

Armed with a simple piano melody and a charging four-word chorus, Phantom Planet became West Coast bards with their 2002 single "California," a Golden State love letter that pithily evoked grand Angeleno myths: manifest destiny, beach bliss, seeing that dude from that movie in the Ralph's checkout line. Playing under the opening credits of The O.C., it was the best-written thing in the show...

This band is awesome. No messing about. The Phantom Planet debut, back in 1998, was on Geffen records. Not a bad start. After that, their discography reads like the resume of a million dollar bit-part actor...

Sound: When I first heard Phantom Planets music, I had to take a step back. Modern guitar, with a '60's and 70's influence. It was weird. I couldn't comprehend how these could go together. But they do. In every track, there are multiple instruments going. It's not only guitar, bass, drums, there's saxophones, trombones, and some piano and other instruments. It's musically complex, and every part fits together. When I heard this album was hand picked out of 130 songs, down to 12, I was amazed...

Sound: Phantom Planet is an alternative rock band except for the fact that it's good. The sound is perfect for people who love rock music but don't necessarily like the dark and violent lyrics that have become to common in the genre. If you like Jet, Franz Ferdinand, Muse, or Led Zepplin you'll love this band. They also use the bass guitar very effectively. PP's bass guitarist is probably one of the best I've heard. // 10 Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics are absolutely fantastic...
