Rich Robinson Concert Tickets

Rich Robinson's talents are already familiar to the millions of fans who've embraced his work as guitarist/songwriter/co-founder of the Black Crowes. But his debut solo effort Paper is a potent musical statement that's likely to come as a pleasant surprise to even his most ardent admirers. The self-produced album - on the artist's own Key Hole label - finds Robinson singing lead and playing most of the instruments on 14 original compositions that reveal the young veteran to be both a distinctive, eloquent lyricist and an engaging, expressive singer. Rich Robinson Reviews

Avg. Customer Rating:
5.0 (based on 9 reviews)

Robinson's second solo album fills the gap created by the ongoing Black Crowes hiatus. It's a gutsy, soulful set and, as you might expect, uses the Crowes' blues-rock template as a base for its more singular endeavours. That said, it's surprising that it doesn't go further. The booklet, boasting b/w photos of the recording sessions and Robinson's country home, suggests an urbane, folky vibe but Through A Crooked Sun is for the most part as muscular as the results of his day job...

Circle Sound/Thirty Tigers On his second solo album, Rich Robinson doesn't drift too far from the earthy psychedelic blues that his band The Black Crowes helped bring back into fashion...

Circle Sound/Thirty Tigers Ladies and gentlemen; boys and girls; children of all ages: I'd like to introduce to you ... Rich Robinson. I'm serious, now - you may know him as a founding member of the Black Crowes, along with his brother Chris, and you may remember his debut solo effort, 2004's Paper. But his new Through A Crooked Sun is a real, pure Rich Robinson album...

Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson is no stranger to the solo album game; he issued his solo debut, Paper, in 2007. Unfortunately, it received rather mixed reviews even amongst Crowes fans, who were less than taken with Robinson's vocals and songwriting...

Since placing his former band The Black Crowes on indefinite leave in 2002, Rich Robinson stepped out from the shadows of the group he formed with his brother Chris to explore a number of artistic endeavors. He spent time writing and producing for other musicians, he formed a quartet called Hookah Brown and he also composed the soundtrack to the 2002 film Highway. Now he unleashes his wonderful debut solo record on his own Keyhole Records to an unsuspecting and probably uncaring British public...

Like the two solo albums his brother Chris already made, Rich Robinson's first record under his own name proves the Black Crowes' ongoing hiatus is no more about musical differences than it is about the suitability of wearing purple crushed velvet onstage. Whether hinged around epic riffs or wistful noodling, all of Paper's songs could have appeared on a Crowes CD. Some could even have featured on the really good albums, notably the "Remedy"-ish "Enemy...

"Wait a second, I think I know this band. The Black Crowes, right? I love that one Otis Redding cover they do. You know the one that goes "Hey little thing / lemme light your candle 'cause / shamana hama shamana mamaro?" Yeah, that's great. Hey, wait a second, what's wrong with the singer's voice? It sounds different, not as wild. What's that you say? It's the lead singer's brother? Rich Robinson? Oh, the guitarist. Yeah, it's kinda cool, I guess...

After a hiatus of a couple of years and some solo projects, The Black Crowes -- primarily brothers Chris and Rich Robinson -- are putting aside their differences and getting back to collaborating. There's even a five-day concert stint planned for New York in March. I'll get to what I have to say about Rich's solo stint, Paper, in a minute. There's just something I want to mention about the band first. The Black Crowes are so vastly underrated in the annals of rock history...

As socially dysfunctional and musically inconsistent as they were, rock history will cast a sympathetic eye on the Black Crows. Their thirteen years of watermelon-and-grits boogie almost single-handedly returned roots rock to the mainstream with classics like "She Talks to Angels." At least half of the credit should go to Rich Robinson, the axe-wielding half of the Robinson brothers who, along with Chris's vocals, defined the Crows' raunchy sound...
