Rob Thomas Reviews

Avg. Customer Rating:
5.0 (based on 9 reviews)

Release Date: April 5 2005 Rob Thomas is one of those musicians that is still relevant, even more than 20 years after he entered the music industry. While he's most known for his work with 90s alternative band Matchbox Twenty (who is still pumping out records and touring today, too), he's also got a string of solo records, where he went into a much different direction musically...

By now nobody needs telling that the former lead singer of Matchbox 20 is just as good -- if not better -- on his own than he is with a group. Rob Thomas's sophomore solo release, Cradlesong, peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart, and you still can't go anywhere without hearing the album's first release, "Her Diamonds," with it's energizing rhythms mixed with moving ethereal metaphors...

Rob Thomas hints at a makeover on his solo debut, trading sculpted arena rock for dance beats and Justin Timberlake hair. "Maybe I should try to find a downtown whore/ That'll make me look hardcore," he muses on the title song. Hardcore Rob?now there's a concept farfetched enough to be fun. With Lil Jon?worthy synthesizer scribbles and chicken-scratch guitars, "Lonely No More" gets him to the doorstep of jiggy-ness...

Among the innumerable discussions launched last week in the wake of Michael Jackson's death, perhaps the one that will go on the longest is whether the King of Pop's passing confirms what Internet evangelists have been saying for years: that the age of the monoculture is over...

Sound: Rob Thomas follow's up his 2005 solo debut, "...something to be", with his new release, "Cradlesong". Much like his last album, the new one is a complete left turn from anything we are used to hearing from MB20. This album left me scratching my head a bit. How can someone who has written some of the most solid music of the past decade put out something so bad...

Sound: Well, he is the lead singer for Matchbox 20 which imediatly made me think - this is going to be good. And I wasn't wrong. The sound is very like Matchbox 20, but you can see where is differs as Rob puts a lot more of himself into this album. All the songs are good and a few (notably: "Lonely No More," "Streetcorner Symphony" and "Now Comes The Night") stand out...

Rob Thomas is a musical chameleon. From his early hits with Matchbox Twenty to his soulful work as a solo artist, the gifted singer/ songwriter has a knack for crafting memorable melodies across the musical divide. On "Cradlesong," his follow-up to 2005's "Something to Be," Thomas returns with a soaring collection of infectious pop songs that are destined for heavy rotation in 2009 and beyond...
