In the wake of their debutsingle, 1980's US R&B;chart-topper, Take Your Time(Do It Right), this Atlantasoul and funk aggregationbegan to experience the lawof diminishing returns withtheir subsequent releases. Intruth, nothing they recordedwas able to match thequality of their very firstsingle - until a song calledHigh Hopes, written byTime members Jimmy 'Jam'Harris and Terry Lewis, appeared on the band'sthird album.

Reunited for the first time in 15 years to play at the Grammys in February, the experience was such that The Time are following that appearance with a season in Las Vegas starting this very week. Which, oddly, sent me back not to that band's brisk and breezy Minneapolitan funk, but to the distinctive oeuvre created by its two most fêted members, songwriters and producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis...

The all but anonymous creatures of the hottest rhythm team in the universe, they could almost pass as the new Chic, getting whole albums over on groove alone. But though there's frisson in the way Jam & Lewis put their slow drag through its paces, what got Chic over was Rodgers & Edwards saving their trickiest beats for their love child.

After having its share of R&B; and funk triumphs in the 1980s, the SOS Band hit a creative low point with 1991's One of Many Nights. The departure of Mary Davis (whose robust lead vocals enriched "Take the Time (Do It Right)," "Just Be Good to Me" and other major hits) had been quite a loss, and while her successor, Chandra Currey, was far from a bad singer, she wasn't in a class with the great Davis...

By the time 1989's Diamonds in the Raw hit the racks, the S.O.S. Band had been chart-toppers for the better part of a decade. And though no one really expected much of the S.O.S. Band, they still had something to prove, and pulled off a hat trick of mammoth proportions, delivering a slick, sophisticated set. With vocalist Chandra Currelly stepping behind the mike alongside Fredi Grace and the production helmed by Curtis Williams (ex-Kool & the Gang), the stage was set for success...

The S.O.S. Band had their last fling with chart success on this 1986 album, which was the swan song for Mary Davis. "The Finest" hearkened back to the glory years, with its jaunty arrangements, collective vocals, and catchy production. Everything else was efficiently sung and assembled, as Jam and Lewis wrung the last commercial drop out of the formula.

One of 1980's most promising R&B; debuts came from the S.O.S. Band, whose debut album is a classic. This sleek yet gritty album went gold in the U.S. (which isn't counting sales in Europe), and the infectious "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" soared to number one on Billboard's R&B; singles chart. It isn't hard to see why the S.O.S. Band's first album was a hit; all of the tracks are excellent. That is true of up-tempo funk-dance gems like "Take Your Time (Do It Right)," "S.O.S...

The signs of decline were all over this 1984 S.O.S. release. Even though they scored two big hits, with the title track checking in at a lofty number six, the exuberance and energy were fading, and rumors about Mary Davis' departure were denied (she left after the next record). The group funk sound was losing its appeal, and the Jam/Lewis combo was beginning to stretch itself too thin.

After a strong start at the beginning of the 1980s, the S.O.S. Band quickly hit that rut which is so sadly common among young bands needing a second shot of gold and, by 1983, they were teetering on the edge of an oncoming oblivion. It is to their ever-lasting credit that not only were they able to pull out of the nosedive, they did it with such aplomb that On the Rise could easily have been retitled Back on Top...
