Tacocat Reviews

Ah Tacocat. A name like that speaks for itself, doesn't it? The four-piece surf-punk-pop outfit from Seattle exude a playful stoner vibe -- sunglasses on, floral print dresses topped with jean jackets, they could draw a crowd based purely on intrigue alone. While they do have some weightier material, like "Hey Girl" (about sexual harassment), most of their engaging songs are either tongue-in-cheek like "Cat Fancy" with the lyrics "Cats all the time, that's what you're gonna get...

The rock gods weren't exactly kind to Seattle's TacocaT for this show. They survived a three-hour ordeal at the border, which cost them $200, only to play to a relative handful of people at two p.m. They'd never successfully crossed the border before, so they had that going for them, but they appeared to be shaken by the experience nonetheless...

If TacocaT had to get by simply on its buoyant power-pop, it would be a middling band in a vast sea of middling pop-punk and power-pop bands. You know the type: they love the Ramones and various other acts, mostly from the '80s and '90s ranging from the Go-Go's to Green Day, and play their instruments well enough to string together three chords. These are the groups that can manage one or two truly good songs per album but don't really have a knack for hooks...

The title of the second full-length by this Washington four-piece implies a resistance to overthinking -- it's text-message-speak for "nevermind," the sort of disclaimer added to those moments when emotions might be too much to speak out loud or even think about. Yet this band seems impervious to embarrassment (they called themselves "Tacocat," after all), and the title feels more like a breezy kiss-off than an apology...

Tweet Ridiculous Punk Rock Fun To be honest, it's hard not to have a good time while listening to Tacocat. The Seattle quartet seem to have a knack for punk-pop anthems, a skill they've certainly perfected over their seven years as a band. This talent comes through strong on NVM, their most recent release, having crafted a sound that is both instrumentally sound and lyrically interesting...

Is misandry a growing threat to our society? Catcalling women on the street: a socially acceptable form of flattery? Do you have an allergy to certain delicious herbal tea blends? If you said yes to any of these questions, the members of Tacocat are not your friends, but you might end up liking them anyway. Though they've been around since 2007, the Seattle quartet are relatively new to a wider audience...

This Seattle band's second album is a tighter, more polished take on their surf-inflected garage-pop, with buzzing guitars and energetic rhythms fleshing out irreverent songs spiked with lots of sparkling pop hooks and humorous lyrics about erratic bus routes, menstruation, cat-calling males and entitled anarchists. 2/21/2014 -
