Goto commentsLeave a commentShare Rainy Days Lead To Great Stories Dusty Rainbow from the Dark is the fourth album released by French DJ/producer Jean-Christophe Le Saoût under the moniker Wax Tailor, and is his most ambitious to date. A concept album, it will bring you back to sitting on the floor of your childhood room, reading a story book along with the record player. The only thing missing is the unmistakable chime indicating it's time to turn the page...

French beatmaker Wax Tailor has been an MC, composer, manager, Next 1000 alum and producer. His sophomore set proves he's most adept at the latter, as he unveils another likeable downtempo diary on wax. The sample-lover showcases more live vocalists and MCs in a mix delving deeply into beauty and suffering. 'The Tune' utilizes old cinema snippets, organ stabs and percussion pops for a blissful turntablist treat...

Since 2004 Jean-Christophe Le Saoût has been releasing Euro-styled hip hop for the masses. It's important to note from whence these beats came and much in the same way that DJ Cam or Nightmares on Wax can be figured as non-residents of the States, Le Saoût - who works under the clever name of Wax Tailor - sits in roughly the same part of the genre...

"In the Mood for Life" is the third album by French producer Wax Tailor, following his 2005 debut, "Tales of the Forgotten Melodies," and 2007's "Hope & Sorrow." I got my introduction to Wax Tailor when I saw him live a few weeks ago. He looked like a French Moby, hiding behind his decks and laptop, and was accompanied by not only rapper Mattic and singer Charlotte Savary, but by a cellist and flautist as well...

Two big improvements for this very French packager of ear cinema. One: His movie-sample "content" is very much l'art pour l'art, often referencing the tools and tactics of his craft. Two: Not to mince words, he employs more African-American voices, including Ursula Rucker and Sharon Jones outdoing their own records -- and sinking the beats deeper in the process.

Full disclosure: It's easy conjuring musical comparisons when there's a handy "sounds like" box on an artist's myspace. Wax Tailor, a French musician, composer, and beat conductor in the mold of Rjd2 or Portishead's Geoff Barrow, has a page on which he lists a handful of golden age hip-hop artists, jazz giants, soul singers, and soundtrack innovators as his influences. That's Tales of Forgotten Melodies' gamut. Genre-melding and cinematic is what he'd like us to say...

It's been hard for trip-hop/turntabalist junkies lately. Our old, and often most popular, dealers who fed us thick beats laced with trumpet bursts and soul samples have since faded into the alleys or are peddling something entirely different. DJ Shadow argues that mainstream hip-hop is worth saving on The Outsider and loses some of his original brilliance in the process. RJD2 goes pop on The Third Hand and succeeds in making something sound so familiar yet so bland...
