Prior to Whitehorse's formation in 2011, married bandmates Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland toured as solo acts with a myriad of Canadian music royalty. Their newest release, a French language EP titled , is a translated collection of previously recorded tracks from the duo's albums with one new song and a traditional French-Canadian ballad...

Goto commentsLeave a commentShare Married Folk Rock This isn't the first time Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland have worked together. Both being musically-inclined individuals from the same area in Canada, they've collaborated since the early 2000s, and Doucet has produced records for both McClelland's former band and her solo work. To top it off, the two got hitched in 2006, and in 2011 went on to form Whitehorse, a folk-rock band named after a remote town in Yukon...

The couple that make up Whitehorse - Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet - happen to be Canadian singer-songwriter mainstays in their own right: both launched solo debuts in 2001, while the latter can trace his charts roots back to 1996 as one-third of Vancouver surf rockers Veal. They also happen to be married. To each other. But it is not simply to marital bliss and respective discographies that this, the first Whitehorse LP, owes its effortless cohesion...

In the past I have enjoyed both Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland and I was intrigued as to what they would sound like as a couple (they are married) ? would this be a case of 1+1=3 or will it equal one and one? In the end the result is a bit of both. You can definitely hear their individual sounds here but Doucet has added punch and raunch to McClelland?s sound and she has created a counterbalance toi his more hokey side...

Arguably the first couple of Canadian roots music, Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland have toured and recorded together extensively over the last six years. In new project Whitehorse, they make this musical marriage official, consummating it with this eight-song, 24-minute mini-album. It includes seamless revisions of two tracks they have previously recorded individually. "Broken" and "Passenger 24" are two of the strongest tunes in the catalogues of, respectively, Doucet and McClelland...

Progression is the latest chunk of abject nihilistic ultra doom sludge from these Aussie heavies, the first full length since their sprawling double cd on 20 Buck Spin, and it continues on right where that one left off...

Falling somewhere between the ultra doom of Khanate, the metallic post rock pummel of Isis, and the shrieking feedback / bowel-loosening dirge of Earth / Sunn O))), Whitehorse kick up a serious racket. Rumbling ambient drones slip into screaming feedback which in turn become huge unstoppable walls of noise, occasionally interrupted by beautiful mellowed out melodic interludes...

Record number two from Australian doom dirge juggernaut Whitehorse. And whaddaya know? It's another live record! But so what!?!? If they sound this heavy and this brutal live, why even bother going in the studio? In fact, we're sort of afraid of what might happen if these guys actually did make it into a studio. Not sure we could handle it! This is intense stuff...

Our pals at Conspiracy Records, a label/distro based in Belgium, who in the past have brought us records by Boris, Jesu, Shora and more, are this year celebrating their 10 year anniversary. A decade of amazing music. From a bedroom based punk rock label, to one of Europe's most important and influential labels and distros, all we can say is HURRAY! And HUZZAH...
