I routinely find myself at odds with not only the RR staff in general but the hip-hop populace as a whole when it comes to Jim Jones. Make no mistake, if he has a hit that crosses over to the mainstream, I enjoy it as much as the next man, because he does have (if nothing else) a charismatic delivery. In general though I find his flow to be overrated and his lyrical content to be nothing special whatsoever...

Jim Jones and his crew The Diplomats are weird, mein. Their beats and lyrics sometimes don't quite make sense. Just check the chorus of Summer wit' Miami, where Jones attempts to compare the female monthly cycle to, uh, the passing of seasons. His big hit, Baby Girl with Max B, is dirty, bass-heavy crunk, and What You Been Drinkin On with Diddy, Paul Wall and Jha-Jha creeps as slowly through your stereo as the cars that'll be playing it...

The Diplomats are part of hip-hop's Always Be Closing generation ? walking brands as likely to call themselves businessmen as rappers ? and no member is more businesslike than Jim Jones, who holds several label jobs in addition to MCing...

We were a little disappointed, OK, extremely disappointed because A Dipset Christmas is just as shitty as we expected. In honor, here is a tracklist that would merit five stars, here is 'A Dipset Christmas' that would actually be ballin'! 1. 'Mas Christ' ' Jimmy Jones ft. Juelz Santana and Pitbull (prod. Neptunes) 2. 'Sandals, Linens & Coal (In Your Stocking)' Cam'ron 3...

If you can say two things about the DipSet, it's that their rappers are consistent and their fans are loyal; or is it that their rappers are loyal and their fans are consistent? Well DipSet definitely stay true to their fam, we haven't seen anybody break camp yet and release an anti-DipSet record. They're definitely consistent too since they seem to put out a new album every few months...

As a music critic one has to stay as neutral and unbiased as possible. It's not always an easy task and to be honest sometimes it's inevitable that personal tastes influence reviews, both in positive and negative ways. I'll easily admit I'm a huge Dipset fan and you only have to look at my Year in Review article to see how highly I think of Jim Jones in particular...

If the measure of a good critic is that people disagree vehemently with his or her reviews, many of the Diplomats fans out there would happily crown me with a Ph.D - not a doctorate, but a Playa Hater's Degree. Even when I was reasonably lukewarm to albums like Cam'Ron's "Come Home With Me" or Juelz Santana's "From Me to U," the volume of e-mail I got was hard to fathom...

I am not even going to discuss the "American Gangster" tie-in theme because so many people are exhausted with it and get right down to brass tacks as far as the music is concerned. I want to love Jim Jones. My primary reason for wanting to love the Dirt Angel is that he is in possession of what I consider the most valuable asset a hip-hop artist can have: a great voice. He has a deeply satisfying baritone accented with just enough nasal quality to differentiate himself from others around him...
