Aretha Franklin at 74 – No Signs of Slowing Down

uncf 110906Aretha Franklin’s announcement last week that she’s almost come to an agreement with Straight Outta Compton director, Scott Bernstein comes on the heels of a busy month for the 74-year-old Queen of Soul. Aretha commands our R-E-S-P-E-C-T with her towering sense of style, soul and swagger in a way that no other singer, past or present, has ever managed to do.

Aretha Franklin ended last year by bringing down the house – and bringing the house to its feet – in a command performance at the Carole King tribute at the Kennedy Center, where her cover of King’s Natural Woman brought tears to the songwriter’s eyes, and had the president and First Lady singing along in their seats. It only took seconds for the video of that iconic moment when Ms. Franklin dropped her mink to go viral, breaking the Internet for days. Is it any wonder that Aretha Franklin tickets fly out of our inventory almost as fast as they get entered into our system? We’re not surprised!

Last month, when the Queen of Soul turned 74, she hosted a small gathering – just about 100 of her closest friends – at New York’s Ritz Carlton hotel. The guests in attendance read like a Who’s Who of the makers and breakers, with well-known names from every sphere of influence. They included comedian Mario Cantone (who did impressions of Judy Garland and Liza Minelli, but never, never Aretha Franklin!), CNN newsman Don Lemon, politician Rev. Jesse Jackson, singer Dennis Edwards of The Temptations and record executive Clive Davis, who signed Aretha to Arista Records back in 1980. The woman’s influence is as massive as her presence – and her presence in the next several months is massive.

White House to Wolf Trap

Other singers who have seen Aretha’s kind of success might be content to rest on their laurels, but the first lady of R&B ain’t having it. She has no plans to retire, or even to slow down. Later this month, she’ll be appearing at the White House for the 5th Annual White House All-Star Global Concert to celebrate International Jazz Day. She’ll be headlining along with such megastars as Sting, Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheney. The show will take place the night before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and will be aired by PBS the following night in recognition of International Jazz Day, April 30.

From there, Ms. Franklin is scheduled to play several shows across the country in May and June, notably in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and will end the summer with an appearance at the two-day festival that celebrates the 100th birthday of Virginia’s legendary Wolf Trap Center for the Arts.
