How Did James Taylor Get His Start?

Taylor’s mellow, easy singing style came around just at the right time to propel him into stardom. It was the end of the 60s with the psychedelic sounds of the San Francisco street bands such as Jefferson Airplane and Big Brother and the Holding Company, staring Janis Joplin, and a more relaxed style of music was coming in vogue. Taylor fit in easily with the sounds from peers like Carole King, especially with his breakout song “Fire and Rain,” in 1970. Then he heard Carole King sing “You’ve Got a Friend” in a nightclub and he recorded it the following year and that definitively launched his career.

Since then, Taylor’s albums have achieved great success. His Greatest Hits album, which was released in 1976, sold more than 12 million copies and was certified Diamond. And every album he released after that sold at least a million copies. And his latest album, Before This World, was released last year and has already achieved number one in the U.S.

Then, at the age of 14, he wrote his first song and he a friend began playing coffeehouses in and around Martha’s Vineyard under the stage name “Jamie & Kootch.”
